[VIDEO] Islanders Capitalize on Avenger Mistakes

Middletown takes advantage of two turnovers by East Greenwich in the second half to take the Division III Super Bowl 33-21.

EAST GREENWICH – Middletown capitalized on a pair of East Greenwich turnovers early in the second half to score 14 points and salt away a Division III Super Bowl victory, 33-21. The Islanders had a 19-7 lead with 1:28 left in the first half, but EG’s Andrew Miner ran a picture perfect two-minute, no huddle offense to score in about 60 seconds. The Avengers went into the break trailing 19-14 as a result. However, Middletown held the Avengers to a three-and-out on their initial possession of the second half. East Greenwich limited Middletown to six plays on their drive, but Alex Cleary couldn’t handle a punt, and the Islanders took over on EG’s 33-yard line. Shemar Vincent recovered for Middletown. It took Middletown seven plays, but …

Islanders Infringe On Avengers Undefeated Football Season

Tied going into the fourth quarter, Middletown outpaces EG for the win.

The EG Avengers faced their toughest opponent of the season this past Friday and came up short, losing to the Middletown Islanders 20-7. The Avengers were able to hold back the Islanders – who came into the game undefeated with an impressive offensive record and strong defense – until the second quarter, when Connor Russ ran the ball in for a touchdown, followed by a successful extra point kick by Preston Ferreira. The teams left the field at the half with the Islanders ahead 7-0. The Avengers came back well into the third quarter with a short running touchdown by Carney Crawford, followed by an extra point kick by Alex Cleary, tying the game.  EG’s offense was unable to penetrate the Islander defense in the last quarter despite an …

Islanders Leave Avengers Stranded 46-59

Middletown came on strong in the second half, outscoring East Greenwich 38 to 26.

The East Greenwich Avengers lost to the Middletown Islanders 46-59 at home Friday night after trailing by only a point at halftime. Islander Toryn Smith-Neves had 21 points on the night while Avenger Brandon Eckles came in with 15 points. Middletown simply outplayed East Greenwich in the second half. But the Avengers were not without a couple of bright spots. EG sophomore Ben Chester had two 3-pointers, one especially exciting one in the second half. And senior captain Scott Cullinane who had seven points, including a 3-pointer that put that briefly gave the Avengers the lead. East Greenwich did not take full advantage to its opportunities at the line. “We attempted 23 free-throws and we made a grand total of 12,” said EG coach Craig …

Avenger Softball Team To Play In Championship

The girls fast pitch softball team shuts out Middletown with a 2-0 semi-final win Friday.

In a defensive battle, the East Greenwich girls softball team ended up on top Friday at Rhode Island College, besting Middletown 2-0 to earn a spot in the championship game on Monday. The Islanders get a second chance to make the finals on Sunday, when they play the winner of Saturday's loser's bracket game of Portsmouth versus Prout. "We're so souped right now," said an exhausted but happy Mollie Anderson, who pitched a steely seven innings for the win. "Can you say enough about Mollie Anderson?" said EGHS coach Rob Petrucci. "I don't think so. Mollie was as cool as the other side of the pillow. She was a professional." He continued, "I'm really proud of this team, going from 5-15 [last season] to the finals [this season]." Islanders …

Avengers End Islanders' Division Title Hopes

Despite a delay due to erratic and dangerous local weather, the Avengers from EG ended the Islanders' upset run with a dominating 15-4 win at home, advancing them to the State Title game against Prout.

The Middletown High School Islanders lacrosse team entered the contest against East Greenwich with a chip on their shoulder. The Avengers didn't have a regular season record to put a dent in that chip, but the two teams, seeded No. 6 and No. 7 went in to battle on Wednesday night with EG moving on to the Division II South Title game after winning 15-4. EG went ahead early and big, dominating the Islanders in nearly every facet of the game. The Islanders battled but could not match the offensive output of the Avengers, going down 14-3 in the fourth period before the game was halted due to lightning strikes nearby. While EG only scored one goal over the final nine minutes of play, the Islanders could only match the Avengers' offensive output…

Thank you for the great story on EGHS quest for their 1st Division II lacrosse championship. All aspects of the game have come together over the last weeks, for sure. Phenomenal goal tending by Dante Granitero, defense, middies and attack have balanced our game peaking at the right time, for sure. We played Prout at home and won, lost a very close game at their field 6-5, this should be the game …   more ›
