Common Medical Procedures Cheaper In Kent County

The cost of colonoscopies, MRIs, CT scans and mammograms can shift a lot from county to county.

It costs about $400 less to get a colonoscopy in Kent County than it does in most of Rhode Island, and other common procedures like MRIs, mammograms and CT scans will cost you less, too.  That's according to data from New Choice Health, a private company that encourages people to become smarter healthcare consumers. New Choice estimates colonoscopies cost about $2,300 in Kent County, compared to $2,700 on average across Rhode Island. An MRI will run you $1,900 in Kent County, a CT scan costs about $1,500 and a mammogram in the area is $250 on average, New Choice reports. Warwick Surgeon Suspended For Drug Use

Michael C. Coburn, M.D., of Kent Surgical Associates, was seen putting syringes in his pocket.

The R.I. Department of Health has suspended Michael C. Coburn from practicing medicine, citing an "immediate danger" to the public, for drug use. Coburn is part of Kent Surgical Associates, which has an office on Centerville Road. He practiced at Kent Hospital. According to the news release, Coburn admitted to using Propofol and Fentanyl. A search of his sleeping room at Kent turned up syringes, Propofol vial caps and other use paraphernalia. Coburn has not seen patients since the items were found and he admitted they were his. He has cooperative fully, according to the release. The suspension began Jan. 3. Coburn is entitled to an administrative hearing within 10 days.
