Rants and Raves

Safety Lessons & Solving Empty Store Blight On Main Street

What to love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this week.

RAVE: To coin an old phrase, East Greenwich is, for the most part, safe as houses. Which is why the recent run of break-ins on “the other side” of Route 2 has so rocked our foundations. They have changed our behavior – for the short-term anyway. It doesn't matter if you live within spitting distance of the neighborhoods where the burglaries took place or a few miles down the road. I know of friends whose doors were always open who have begun locking their doors even when they're home, looking up old alarm codes to burglar systems they haven’t used since they installed them and leaving lights on at night even though they are lifetime tree huggers.  The other day, my 13-year-old son, who barely even notices when I leave the house for a …

Rants and Raves

I ♥ Bargain Books & Fund Teen Center!

What to love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this week.

RAVE: Mea culpa. I know I complained about the proliferation of billboard signs popping up around town a few weeks ago, but I have to admit that I am loving the rogue homemade library book sale ones. The Friends of the Library, who put on the annual book sale, have limited funds and would much rather the money go towards things like community programming and updating the library’s equipment than printing signs. So it’s great to see our community step up on their own and post (and I hope eventually remove) their own signs. I can understand their enthusiasm. Though I've been telling myself for the last couple of months that I'm not allowed to buy any more  books for the foreseeable future (and to use the library resources instead), I HAD to…

Library Love And Smell Sensitivity Stupidity

What to love and loath about living in East Greenwich this week.

RAVE: How can anyone argue with a public system that you have access to 24/7, that can give you instant information on everything from how to file your taxes to how to bake a gluten-free cake, that will lend you the latest in books, music and movies and that puts on free art shows, concerts, health presentations and kids’ entertainment with no questions asked? I’m talking about the library, of course. There’s a lot of talk about the “death of the public library” these days. It isn’t simply the perpetual budget crises either. It’s the move to digital literature, and the idea that once there are no more print books (or rather if there are no more print books), the library as an institution will cease to exist. Say it ain’t so, Joe. Because …

Book or Nook?

East Greenwich Library Director Karen Taylor sees a busy future

An old adage says if buggy whip manufacturers had understood they were in the accelerator business they might still around. Karen Taylor understands libraries are not book warehouses, but are in the knowledge business.  “That is the world we are in — people getting together to discuss ideas," she said recently. “That’s not ever going to go away.” Taylor is well aware thousands of people unwrapped Nooks, Kindles and other electronic reading device presents this Christmas, but says libraries have always had to incorporate new formats, from micro film and audio books, to DVDs and the Internet. She sees e-books as tools, but something like getting a television without cable access. While electronic devices include some free books, they are …

Downloading all those electronic books starts to get very expensive! Anyone with a RI public library card can download ebooks for FREE at http://riezone.lib.overdrive.com . You get to keep them for 21 days. Also, watch for more school libraries to start offering ebooks. As for me, I use both but still prefer the feel of a real book in my hands.   more ›

EG’s Unsung Heroes Of 2011: Carolin Goldman

East Greenwich Patch recognizes a few of the people in town who are quietly making a difference.

Carolin Goldman has been a booster and user of the East Greenwich Free Library for years. She took her enthusiasm to a new level in 2008 when she joined the library’s board and set her sights on the largely dormant Friends of the Library. “When she came on the board of trustees, she decided that that would be her mission,” recounted Karen Taylor, the library’s director. “That was her mission - to revitalize the Friends. We’ve always had a Friends, it just wasn’t very active.” Paulette Miller, herself a member of the Friends, nominated Goldman as one of EG Patch’s Unsung Heroes of 2011. “Carolin knows that a library can be a community cornerstone where lives are enriched and conversations build awareness,” Miller wrote in an email. “She …
