GOP Sweeps Council; Mark, Gifford, Smith Win School Committee; Giarrusso Leads Dist. 30

Ballot question on merging Fire District with Town approved.

Voters in East Greenwich returned all incumbents to office, with the five Republican Town Council members and School Committee Chair Deidre Gifford winning re-election. Newcomers Carolyn Mark and Clark Smith also won seats on the School Committee. Republican Anthony Giarrusso was leading the R.I. House Dist. 30 race by 36 votes over Democrat Mark Schwager, with more than 500 mail ballots and the portion of West Greenwich that belongs to Dist. 30 still uncounted. Giarrusso got 2,798 votes in East Greenwich and Schwager got 2,762. Kevin McDonough, an independent, got 755 votes. Ballot Question 8, a nonbinding referendum asking if the EG Fire District should be merged with the Town of EG, was approved 3,994 to 2,120. For Town Council, …

Just some points to consider: 1. Maybe they created a separate Fire District to keep the Council out of the Fire business 2. Have the Council focus on the Town's issues before they worry about a well run, proven in its annual audit, Fire District 3. Mark, Gifford, Quinn Win Democratic School Committee Primary

A total of 1,057 votes were cast in Tuesday's primary.

Carolyn Mark, Deidre Gifford, and Eugene Quinn were the top three vote-getters in Tuesday's Democratic primary for East Greenwich School Committee, earning places on the Nov. 6 general election ballot. Mark, a newcomer, was the top vote-getter, with 405 votes. School Committee Chairwoman Deidre Gifford got 388 votes, and Eugene Quinn, also a newcomer, got 293 votes. All three were endorsed by the EG Democratic Town Committee. Brian Warburton, a first-time candidate, got 219 votes. The three Democrats will face Republican Clark Smith and independent candidate Domenic Marcone in November. Gifford was the only incumbent running for re-election. Four Democrats In School Committee Primary For Three Seats

Incumbent Chairwoman Deidre Gifford and newcomers Brian Warburton, Eugene Quinn, and Carolyn Mark face off Tuesday.

Four Democrats will be on the primary ballot for East Greenwich School Committee – only three will go on to the general election on Nov. 6. Deidre Gifford, chair of the School Committee, is seeking a second term. Carolyn Mark, Eugene Quinn, and Brian Warburton are seeking elected office for the first time.
