No School Monday

The Blizzard of 2013 prompts a second day of no school for students in East Greenwich and most of Rhode Island.

There will be no school for East Greenwich public school students Monday, Feb. 11.  Power has been restored to much of the town, but as of 4 p.m. Sunday, both Meadowbrook and East Greenwich High School remained without power. In the recorded phone message that went out to families, Supt. Victor Mercurio said, "Due to power outages associated with the storm, there will be no school Monday." Even if power had been restored, however, Town Manager Bill Sequino had said opening the schools might not have been safe, with roadways still clogged with snow. On Monday, town DPW crews will be widening the roads, making it easier for cars, buses, and pedestrians.

School Cancelled Friday In Advance Of Major Snow Storm

Supt. Victor Mercurio said he was concerned about releasing students – and staff – into a blizzard.

With a major snow storm bearing down on the region, Supt. Victor Mercurio has cancelled school for Friday.  The latest forecast has snow beginning overnight tonight into Friday with the heaviest snowfall due to begin Friday afternoon.  "I'm concerned about dismissing students into a storm," he said Thursday before making his decision. Police Chief Tom Coyle had encouraged Mercurio to cancel school.  This will be the third day of cancelled classes this year.

Five Activities For A No-School Day

By day three of Sandy school-less-ness, we could all use a few new ideas....

The kids may be thrilled to have another day off, but for parents and caregivers all that free time can wind up being something less than positive. Especially if there's no power. We can't help with the power, but we can offer a few ideas of what to do. 1. Visit Boesch Farm and the animals of Pat's Pastured. Did you know there are sheep and cows and chickens and pigs and turkeys and ... well, you get the idea. It's a wonderful place and it's right in East Greenwich on South Road.  2. Have a pumpkin-seed-spitting contest. It sounds gross and is gross but really what's better than gross for kids? 3. Head to Roger Williams Park Zoo. It's open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the temperature will be in the 60s today. 4. Tour an EG cemetery or two. It …

No School Tuesday In EG

With Hurricane Sandy continuing to pummel the region, Supt. Mercurio makes the call at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

With Hurricane Sandy still raging up and down the Northeast coast Monday evening, East Greenwich Supt. Victor Mercurio made the call to cancel school Tuesday. School was also cancelled Monday.  It's unclear as of yet if the planned day off Thursday, Nov. 1, for teacher conferences will take place in light of the two unexpected days off.  "We're still working on that as a possibility," said Mercurio Monday. "Nothing's been firmed up yet one way or another." EG Patch will continue to update this story as information becomes available.
