Glare Of National Spotlight Captures North Kingstown

Ever since Friday – when the world learned Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev's wife was from North Kingstown – news organizations have been camping out on Coriander Lane, much to residents' dismay.

Just 30 minutes south of Providence sits North Kingstown, Rhode Island – your run-of-the-mill suburban town, with a predominantly middle class population of around 26,000. This small town’s major claims to fame are probably that it was home to the famous American portraitist Gilbert Stuart and Olympic swimmer Elizabeth Beisel. Needless to say, it’s not really a hotbed of news nor is it on the radar of national news media – that is until last week. Once news broke that the widow of one suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing hailed from this small town by the bay, North Kingstown suddenly found itself on the map. NBC, CNN, The New York Daily News, The New York Post, the Associated Press and even the UK Daily Mail have been staked out on …

Putting Post Road In NK On A Diet?

DOT and North Kingstown officials look at lane reduction on Post Road.

Big changes could be coming to Post Road in North Kingstown in the form of a “diet” courtesy of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. DOT officials are considering reducing part of the roadway from four lanes to three, with two travel lanes in other direction and a center turn lane. The new configuration would span from Maxwell Drive (just north of Camp Avenue) and stretch down to West Main Street at the entrance of Wickford Village. According to DOT officials who presented the plan to the North Kingstown Planning Commission this past Tuesday, this project could be on the docket as soon as next year. According to North Kingstown Planning Director Jon Reiner, the town has been looking to make changes to that road since before he …

Bob Watson Gets A Shout Out, And A DD Downer

What to love and hate about living in East Greenwich this week.

RAVE: When I moved to Rhode Island in 2000, the casino question was a big issue here in East Greenwich. Now the (un)lucky neighborhood is North Kingstown. Do I want a casino in Rhode Island? Not particularly. I do not want it in my town, I do not want it in the next town down. I do not like gambling per se, I do not believe they raise revenues in any way. Okay, enough channeling Dr Seuss. Sure, I can see how a casino might add to the local and state coffers at first blush, but I believe that in the long run, there are added stresses to the town’s and county’s services. Studies show that in addition to the street traffic that comes to town on the heels of a casino, there are other kinds of traffic — such as crime, drugs, and prostitution. …

Quonset Perfect For A Casino, Says Rep. Trillo

The Warwick state rep wants to bring a casino to Quonset in North Kingstown.

According to state Rep. Joseph Trillo (R-Warwick), Quonset is the perfect spot for a “world class casino.” He hopes that together with Rep. John Carnevale (D-Johnston, Providence), he will be able to garner enough support to present a bill allowing a casino at Quonset. Trillo said that Sen. Frank Ciccone (D-Providence, North Providence) is interested in sponsoring the bill in the Senate. “When Massachusetts builds its three casinos - which they will do - we’re going to lose money,” Trillo said in an interview Wednesday night. “It’s not a question of whether you want gambling or don’t want gambling — gambling is here.” According to Trillo, Quonset’s deep-water port can accommodate up to four cruise ships at a time. That, together the …

I was a bartender at the Providence Marriott [Cahoots] when Foxwoods opened. Business decreased by 20% and it never came back AND we were 50 miles away. A full fledge casino would ruin all the current restaurants and other businesses within a 20 mile radius I would estimate. If you are going to make gambling legal at least let everybody be able to have it available to them to make money with. If …   more ›
