Calling hours will take place Thursday evening at Our Lady of Mercy Church.
The mood was subdued at the parish office at Our Lady of Mercy Church on Monday. There was an air of disbelief, following the previous day's news that the Rev. Monsignor John W. Lolio had died early Sunday after falling and hitting his head. “He said the Mass Saturday night. Everybody’s stunned and shocked,” said parish secretary Jean Chappell, who had worked with Msgr. Lolio for his entire 20-year tenure at OLM. “He was a gentle, caring, understanding person.” Fr. Charles Grondin, associate pastor at OLM for the past five years, echoed Chappell’s words. “He was caring, gentle and peaceful,” said Grondin. “He was good with everybody. Everyone felt comfortable with him, at ease.” At Our Lady of Mercy School, just across the street from the…

The OLM fourth grader is a big Patriots fan.
Joey Allen predicts the Patriots will beat the Giants 24-14 in Sunday's Super Bowl. And he'll be right there to see if he's right. His family has season tickets to the Patriots, which gave them the option to buy two tickets to the big game. "That's a no-brainer," said Joey's dad, Larry Allen. "It's just so big." Larry has been to previous Super Bowls, but this will be Joey's first. "I'm excited," he said, wearing a big smile. The fourth grader attends Our Lady of Mercy School and lives in Cowesett. Joey was particularly happy that his favorite player, Ron Gronkowski, may be able to play in the game, after being sidelined recently with an ankle injury. He likes Tom Brady too. And he's optimistic that the Pats defense is going to do the job…

The two-year tradition is a hit with the students and those children who receive the bears.

At Our Lady Mercy School’s annual Santa’s Village celebration earlier this month, families were treated to music, crafts, stories and even Santa himself. The highlight of the day, however, was a two-year old tradition that helps teach the children an important lesson about giving, which included making their own teddy bear to be donated to charity. Prior to the event, families pre-registered and paid for the bears, which were created with the help of Chris and Mary Beth Kreager of Tower House B&B in Narragansett. The bears were then stuffed, named and given birth certificates, and usually given a big hug before being given up for “adoption." A total of 80 bears were created by OLM students that day. They were then donated to programs at…

The annual walkathon fundraiser helps offset costs for such programs as robotics as well as for field trips and technology upgrades.
Last Thursday, students from Our Lady of Mercy School took part in a walkathon that's become an annual fundraising event for the private Catholic elementary school. This year's Walkathon raised a whopping $10,000, which will be used for school programs such as robotics, as well as for field trips and to help improve technology at the school. Paws, the mascot from the Pawtucket Red Sox, was also in attendance to encourage the students, faculty and parents along the way.
