Thanksgiving is a week away. Several area shops can help take some of the work out of your day.
Thanksgiving is days away. If you're like me, your panic level is beginning to rise. But have no fear. There is plenty of help right here in East Greenwich. Let's start with turkeys. Need a bird? For the first time (in recent history anyway), you can buy an East Greenwich pastured-raised bird at Pat's Pastured, the farming business at Boesch Farm on South Road. If you haven't reserved a bird, take your chances on Tuesday between 2 to 7 p.m., when turkeys are being picked up. There will be centerpieces, pies and vegetables for sale at the farm that day too. Check out the vendors here. At Dave's Marketplace, there are many different kinds of turkeys to choose from, including two "natural" varieties. You can have Dave's make it "oven ready…

Volunteers can learn about the farm while helping with brush clearing and trail maintenance, and get lunch too.
The weather Saturday, Sept. 22, looks great for the Municipal Land Trust’s “Celebration of Autumn,” a day of cleanup and a shared meal at Boesch Farm. For those who’ve never been to the farm, this would be a great introduction. For old hands, it’s just another excuse to spend time in perhaps the prettiest spot in East Greenwich. Walking trails circle the farm, which is now the home of Pat’s Pastured, a pasture-fed animal farm run by Patrick McNiff. There are pigs, dairy cows, chickens, rabbits, sheep, turkeys, and work dogs on the property. This is the farm of your young imagination. It’s been a very busy year for McNiff, who moved in last fall after running his business from a property on Jamestown. “Not only the field stuff but getting …

The market will continue Mondays from 3 to 6 p.m. through October 29.
At 5 p.m. this past Monday, the East Greenwich Farmers Market was in more than full swing: it was positively humming. Pizza was baking, musicians were strumming, and vendors were selling. That school had just let out for summer and the weather was perfect were icing and a scoop of ice cream on the cake. Our own (ok, I've got to just say it) charming farmers market is back. There were, happily, several familiar vendors, including Lucky Foot Ranch produce, the Coffee Guy, and Pat's Pastured pastured-raised meat and poultry. But there were some exciting additions. Talullah's taco stand, a seafood vendor and Emmy Nutting, all of 9 years old, making balloon animals for a highly appreciative crowd. The market will be on Academy Field beside …

During last week's Earth Day clean ups, some volunteers pitched in at the Land Trust property Boesch Farm.
There was work to be done at Boesch Farm last Saturday — let's face it, on a farm there's always work to be done. But on this particular day, Earth Day, volunteers had arrived to pitch in. The workers spent time pulling up worn plastic sheeting that had been placed on many of the fields at Boesch under the last tenant, when it was a vegetable farm. Now that it's an animal farm, the plastic needs to be taken up. But it's a slow process, since it is buried in many places under soil and breaks easily. Volunteers were working on a field where chickens were milling about, and a handful of dairy cows, as well as a guardian dog and her young pups, were nearby. Jake and Kate Lehoullier, 8 and 5 years old, had a different job. They picked up eggs…

Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, Dec 21.
Turkey Trot Update: Organizers of the hugely successful Turkey Trot last month presented an $8,000 check to Food Cupboard managers Steve and Chris Bartlett last week - far exceeding the $2,000 they’d hoped to raise. Amy Moore, who together with Michelle Clark, put the Turkey Trot together, also said that shirts for those who did not receive them on race day will be available after Christmas. The chickens have landed! Pat McNiff’s chickens have arrived at Boesch Farm and are settling in. According to McNiff, “The chickens are extremely happy with their new home.” The rest of McNiff’s animals - dairy cows, sheep and pigs - are due to move in sometime in January. McNiff is the new tenant farmer at the town-owned property. Library storytime …

For the next few days, it's all turkeys, all the time.
Listening to Pat McNiff talk about his turkeys - literally talk turkey - makes you think differently about about your holiday bird - that large frozen mass you usually dump into your shopping cart along with the canned pumpkin, fresh string beans and box stuffing this time of year. McNiff is owner of Pat's Pastured and the new tenant at Boesch Farm on South Road. His turkeys are different. "How many people actually know where their turkey came from - what state, what country, how they were were raised?" he said during a visit Friday to see his turkeys. They are in Jamestown on the farmland he's leased for the past few years and they will not be making the move to East Greenwich. Instead, the turkeys will be slaughtered this weekend and …
