School Committeeman Martin Arrested for Driving With Suspended License

Martin was also cited for driving an unregistered car without an up-to-date inspection.

Paul Martin, four-term School Committee member, was arrested Thursday, Aug. 9, for driving with a suspended license after he was pulled over on Division Street near Howland Road because his car bore no inspection sticker. In a routine check, police found Martin's license to be suspended. In addition, the car showed no active registration since August 2011. Initially Martin, 69, told police he could not find his registration or insurance and explained he was with the School Department. According to the report, when police told him they'd learned his license had been suspended, Martin said, "I'm going to call your chief!" Martin's car was towed from the scene. Martin was released and police mailed the summonses to him. Martin, whose term is…

Update: Martin, Wray, Jones Out Of Local Races

Paul Martin says he needs to overcome health problems, doesn’t count out a run for town office in two years.

Town Canvasser Elaine Vespia confirmed Monday morning two candidates for local office – Paul Martin (School Committee) and Tony Jones (Town Moderator) did not submit signatures to get on the ballot in November. A third candidate, Bill Wray (School Committee) has withdrawn. A story posted here yesterday had initially relied on information the R.I. Secretary of State's website, which had not been updated to reflect signatures received beyond Wednesday. Friday was the deadline for candidates to submit signatures. Martin, a Republican, said Monday he is dropping out of the race because of ongoing health problems. He suffered a stroke two years ago and said he’s gained weight since then and had other health issues. Republican Bill Wray did …

Martin, 2 Others Out Of Local Races

Paul Martin and Tony Jones fail to turn in enough signatures; Bill Wray withdraws.

I wrote this story based on results found on the R.I. Secretary of State's website Saturday. Two readers have alerted me the website has not updated its counts and, in at least two cases, the information was wrong. I have amended the story to reflect this, and will confirm with the Town Clerk's office Monday morning. I regret any inaccuracies. – EM Friday was the deadline to submit signatures for candidates wishing to get their name on the ballot in November. Two candidates for local office – Paul Martin, and Tony Jones – failed to submit enough signatures; one candidate who did submit enough signatures – Bill Wray – has withdrawn. With Martin and Wray out of the Republican race for School Committee, only one Republican candidate for …

School Committee Race: Wealth Of Candidates

Four Democrats, three Republicans and one independent signed up to run for School Committee. Now we wait to see if they all submit the required signatures.

Eight candidates have signed up to run for School Committee – eight. For three seats. It’s hard to complain about apathy this election year, at least on the school side. (The Town Council race is less rosy picture, with five Republicans but no Democrats running.) Here’s a rundown of the candidates in alphabetical order. They must collect the signatures of at least 50 registered East Greenwich voters by 4 p.m. July 13 to earn a spot on the ballot. If all four Democrats submit enough signatures, there will be a primary Sept. 11 to narrow the field to three. Deidre Gifford, a Democrat, currently serves as chair of the East Greenwich School Committee. She is running for a second term. Gifford is an obstetrician/gynecologist. She is the …

Local Republicans Decline To Endorse Paul Martin For School Committee

The two-term incumbent is not one of the two GOP candidates endorsed by Republican Town Committee at their meeting last week.

School Committeeman Paul Martin, a Republican, is running for a third term on the school panel, but the EG Republican Town Committee did not endorse him at their meeting last Wednesday, June 27. Instead, the town GOP endorsed newcomers Clark Smith and William Wray. Wray was named by the committee during the Wednesday meeting; he did not submit declaration of candidacy papers. By law, town committees have 24 hours to fill out their endorsements. "The members felt his poor attendance at School Committee didn't warrant the endorsement of the Town Committee," GOP Town Committee vice chair Brad Bishop offered via email as to why the committee didn't endorse Martin. Chuck Newton, chair of the town GOP, said, "We don't have half School Committee…

Town Races: Democrats Face Primary In School Committee Race

Republicans field a full slate for Council and School Committee; Democrats offer no candidates for Council, four for School Committee.

The Democrats cup runneth over for School Committee, with four candidates for three seats, while they failed to field a single candidate for Town Council's five available seats. Republicans, meanwhile, have a full slate of five candidates for council, two candidates for School Committee and one candidate for Town Moderator. By 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, a total of 15 people had filed to run for town offices – 8 Republicans, 4 Democrats, 1 Libertarian, 1 Moderate, and 1 independent. There are 6 candidates for Town Council, 7 for School Committee, and 2 for Town Moderator. Former School Committee Chair Jean Ann Guliano is making a run for Town Council. If she wins, she would be the first woman councilor in 10 years. Guliano is running as a…

I feel I am in a unique position because I have two children in EG school system and one at a private school. I completely agree with Koehler. Sometimes a non-public school provides a different environment that better suits some children. I do care about the public school system, and I am an active parent there. Perhaps, Lorax, you should not paint everyone with the same broad brush.   more ›
