A decisive 13-4 semifinal win over Wheeler gives the Avengers the state championship berth Sunday at 3 p.m. at Brown.
The Wheeler Warriors kicked off their Division II semifinal lacrosse playoff bid against EG Wednesday with a goal by Clement Titsworth just minutes into the game. That was the only lead the Warriors had, however, as the Avengers answered with four goals of their own in the first quarter and a 13-4 score overall. The win gives the Avengers a chance at a third-consecutive D II state championship. EG will take on South Kingstown Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Brown University. Those four goals in the first quarter were two by Colin Bernier and one each by Captain Sam Feinberg and Ryan Trinque. The second quarter continued in the same fashion, kicked off by another Wheeler goal by Titsworthjust, with EG responding quickly with successful points from…

EG to play Wheeler on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Carcieri Field; Girls fall to Bay View in the quarterfinals.
EG lacrosse fans kicked off last Thursday’s playoffs cheering on the Lady Avengers in their Division I quarterfinal bid against Bay View Academy. Avenger Carolyn Cruise made a successful shot on goal to bring the game to a tie with just over a minute left in the game. A tough call against EG and another goal by Bay View were just enough to give Bay View a 12-11 win over the Avengers. The EGHS boy’s team then took the field under cloudy skies for their Division II quarterfinal game against the Prout Crusaders. Although EG had two wins against Prout during the regular season, the Avengers experienced their typical slow start. Fans had to wait nearly six minutes into the first quarter for EG to score, with offensive pressure building …

Playoffs begin Thursday at 7 p.m. at home on Carcieri Field.
The EGHS boy’s lacrosse team continued with aggressive offensive play and strong defense over the last two weeks of the regular season, kicked off by a 12-1 victory over Prout. The Avengers followed with a decisive 8-0 win over South Kingstown, followed by a 17-4 victory over Middletown played over two days due to rain and storm delays. At this point, the Avengers lead Division II at 13-0, followed closely by rival South Kingstown with an 11-2 record. According to the RIIL website, EGHS leads the entire league in wins and has averaged nearly 12 goals per game. The Avenger defense has also been strong, allowing an average of only 2 goals …

EG will play Middletown in the D III championship game Sunday afternoon at Carcieri Field.
The East Greenwich Avengers came out strong Wednesday night against the Moses Brown Quakers at Carcieri Field, and stayed in front the entire game, winning 25-13 and a berth in the Super Bowl Sunday. The Avengers haven't been in a Super Bowl since 2006. They will play Middletown, the only team that's beaten EG this season. Middletown beat Narragansett 34-14 in their semi-final contest. The Avengers dominated the first half, with a touchdown by Carney Crawford (no extra point) in the first quarter and a TD by Meran Topalian in the second quarter. Off a fumble by Moses Brown with 2 minutes left in the half, Alex Cleary scored a touchdown (no extra point). The Quakers got on the scoreboard at the end of the second quarter, with a touchdown …

Boy’s Lacrosse team looks to defend Division II Championship title Monday against South Kingstown.
The EG Boys Lacrosse team came out with guns (and sticks) blazing Wednesday against the Providence Country Day Knights. Captain Kyle Carosotto, who scored the first goal just over a minute into the first quarter, said after the game, “We came out with a fire in our hearts and an uncommonly strong start.” EG’s offense continued at an aggressive pace with another four unanswered goals in the first quarter. PCD kicked off second quarter with some fire, scoring one goal early on; however the Avengers were quick to come back with another four goals resulting in a 9-1 EG lead at the half. EG’s defensive efforts were successful throughout the game, with numerous saves by Goalie Jack Trutza. The Avengers scored another three goals in the second…

The Smithfield team overpowered EG in the first round of the playoffs, 49-39.
After a near-perfect regular season, the Lancers were handed a tough defeat Wednesday when they went up against Ponaganset Middle School in the first round of the playoffs. Ponaganset won 49-39. “It’s hard because we wanted it so bad,” said eighth grader Krisitin Carosotto, who scored 12 points in the game. Cole was down 15 points going into the fourth quarter. Courtney McMullen had back-to-back baskets to start it off and the Lancers outscored Ponaganset 13 to 8 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough. McMullen had a good game, scoring three 3-pointers in the first half. “She had more 3’s today than we had the whole season,” said Coach Jason Martin. “It was a very physical game,” he said. “We had one of my players home sick today, my backup …

Down by 8 at the half, the Lancers battle back in first round of the playoffs.
The Cole Middle School Boys Basketball team went into the playoffs with a better record, 12-2, than its 8-4 opponent, Ferri Middle School of Johnston, but the Lancers had to fight back from an 8-point deficit at the half to secure their 57-55 win at home in the first round Tuesday. In the final seconds of the game, Cole eighth grader Brian Gemma hit a three-pointer to pull ahead of the Jaguars. He scored once more at the line and Ferri’s final shot bounced off the rim, giving the Lancers the win. “It was definitely Brian Gemma’s day. He did awesome,” said Cole coach Joe Szymkowicz afterwards. “He shoots a lot. Other coaches might yell and scream at him but he can shoot all day as far as I’m concerned because he doesn’t miss when it counts…
