The site of the former Post Office Cafe is now a rocking burger-and-music spot, with a fun family menu.
Several months after the initial announcement, Rok Bar and Grill has opened for business, nearly two years after the closure of former occupant, the Post Office Cafe. The restaurant is at 11 Main St., at the corner of Division Street. The rock-and-roll concept is a tribute to Steve Marra, an EG restaurant legend whose company owned not only the Post Office Cafe but the Grille on Main, as well as several other restaurants in Rhode Island. Marra died unexpectedly in August 2011. According to Brendan Sweet, who owns Rok Bar with Walter King, a rock-and-roll style restaurant was something Marra had talked about. The former post office now features an Elvis Room, lots of classic photos and more than a few guitars. Another room is set aside for…

The owner says he's aiming for a mid to late September opening; Town Council approves liquor license transfer.
Steve Marra didn't live to see it, but the restaurant concept he dreamed of with Brandon Sweet – general manager of Waterplace Restaurant – moved one step closer to reality Monday night, when the Town Council approved transfer of the Post Office Cafe's liquor license to Rok Bar n Grill at the same site. Marra died a year ago. Sweet said he hopes the rock-and-roll-themed restaurant will open in mid- to late-September. It will be a family-friendly place, he told council members. “We’re looking to have a little something for everybody,” Sweet said. The menu will include salads, sandwiches, gourmet burgers, and children's meals according to a discription that accompanied Sweet's application. The application included victualling and …

After more than a year of inaction, work is under way at the landmark building, with hopes for a late July opening.
There’s a restaurant construction boomlet taking place in East Greenwich right now. In addition to publicized happenings at Blu (the former 20 Water Street) and the Oyster Bar (formerly Custom House Coffee), there’s new life at the Post Office Cafe site, as well as Jiggers. Just when it was looking like the Post Office Cafe would become the Sunoco wasteland of northern Main Street, work is being done inside in preparation for reopening this summer. Brandon Sweet, manager at Waterplace Restaurant, said, “We are pushing for the end of July. “We are still finalizing the concept,” he continued. “There will be a little bit for everybody. It will be family friendly, but the menu won’t be in direct competition with The Grille.” Sweet was …

What to love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this week.
RAVE: Happy things are happening on Main Street. Since bemoaning the abundance of empty storefronts last week, I have found out that two (oh, happy days! Not Italian) eateries are about to open. The Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar is going in where Custom House Coffee/Fat Belly’s Bagels/Café Panache/Julia’s - which is when I moved here so there may be more and I may have missed some as this truly seems to be a black hole spot for businesses (but hopefully that’s about to change) – used to be (now there’s a mouthful for giving directions Rhode Island-style). As far as I’m concerned, any eatery that has the words "Oyster” and “Bar” in their name has to be good! So yay! Even tastier tidings come from the other side of the street where the …

Michael Marra says renovations are taking place and it could open in early 2012.
Michael Marra appeared before the Town Council Monday night to persuade the panel to renew liquor and victualing licenses for both the Grille on Main and the closed Post Office Café. Marra - brother of Steve Marra - said that the Post Office Café, which as been closed since January, was being renovated and the plan was to reopen it in early 2012. The Council voted 5-0 to renew both licenses. The Post Office Café closed one month after the Marra Restaurant Group went into receivership. At the time, a spokesman for the receiver said the restaurant would reopen in April. That didn’t happen. Then, in August, Steve Marra – head of the Marra Restaurant Group – died. Receivership details are still being worked through and there is now the added …
