Police, Schools Begin Lockdown Reviews

The lockdown drill at Hanaford Wednesday was the district's first since the shootings in Newtown.

The lockdown drill at Hanaford Elementary School started like this: Principal Beth Cauley's voice over the intercom saying, "There is an emergency. Lockdown is in effect."  Then there was the sound of doors shutting. Just that. No voices. No footsteps. It was only a drill, but it was the first lockdown drill since the shooting rampage at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., left 20 young students and 6 adult staff members dead. Because of that, Cauley had warned students, staff and parents (via email) about the drill. She visited every class on Tuesday and answered questions from students – questions like, "What if I'm in the bathroom?" and "What if we're outside?" She had answers for them. If a child is in the bathroom at the start of…

New Meadowbrook Principal Named

Neil Marcaccio will be at a meet-and-greet for students and parents on Friday, at Cole Middle School.

The School Committee approved the appointment of Neil Marcaccio to be the new principal of Meadowbrook Farms Elementary School at their meeting Tuesday night in a 6-0 vote. Paul Martin was absent. Marcaccio comes to the district from the Warwick public schools, first as a special education teacher and then as interim head of both Wyman and Lippitt elementary schools this past year. A North Kingstown native, Marcaccio spent the past seven years in Warwick. He doubled up at Wyman and Lippitt, providing much-needed leadership at both schools, according to Supt. Victor Mercurio. "One of the striking things about Neil – they were without leadership for a time and he was successful in both places," said Mercurio. In addition, as a school …

Meadowbrook Interim Principal Returns After 35 Years [VIDEO]

Anthony D'Acchioli, who took over on Friday, last served as superintendent in Woonsocket before retiring seven years ago.

Anthony D'Acchioli retired from education seven years ago and hasn't been back, unlike many school administrators who take on short interim stints. He answered the call this time — to serve as interim principal at Meadowbrook Farms School — because he said this particular school was different. "I haven't worked since I retired," said D'Acchioli, "but when I heard it was Meadowbrook, I had no choice," he said. That's because D'Acchioli taught and served as principal at Meadowbrook in the 1970s. He was also principal at Frenchtown for six years, and taught at Cole. An interim was needed because of the swift departure earlier this month of Ron Areglado, "Dr. A." to most everyone at the school. After nearly two years on the job — himself an "…

Meadowbrook Principal "Dr. A" Resigns, Citing Health Concerns

Supt. Mercurio has been in contact with a two or three people to fill in as principal in the interim.

In a move that took many by surprise, Meadowbrook Farms Principal Ron Areglado resigned his job Monday, effective immediately, citing health concerns. Supt. Victor Mercurio told School Committee members during a meeting Tuesday night that he is talking to a few people about filling the post in the interim. "This abrupt decision is one that I had not anticipated having to make," Areglado wrote in a letter to the Meadowbrook community. "But due to personal circumstances related to my health, my personal physician, my loving family and I have determined this course of action is necessary." The announcement comes as a blow to many at Meadowbrook. "I was as surprised and disappointed with the news as was the rest of the MFS community," said …

High School Schedule Changes For Third Time In 3 Years

The riddle is how to help lighten the load for students while still complying with state mandates

In a continuing effort to address jam-packed schedules and overburdened students, the School Committee approved a high school schedule that reduces the number of classes on Wednesdays during a meeting Tuesday night. Two years ago, 15-minute daily "advisory" periods were added to the high school schedule, taking the place of study halls, which had been banned by the state Department of Education. In advisory, a group of students met with the same teacher or administrator over the entire year. The idea was to give students an opportunity to develop a relationship with another adult in the building, while also being able to use that time to address topical issues. What was done in advisory was generally left up to the individual advisors. …

The wednesday schedule is supposed to be "sress-free" and teachers are not supposed to give out tests or quizzes. But, they do. Wednesday is a waste of a day. Advisory is long, boring, and cuts into the middle of my day. The teachers never let you leave, they also say 20 minute lectures, and always yell. I hate my advisory. I was wednesdays. I would rather have it be a regular school day. I …   more ›

Hanaford Principal To Return To Classroom Teaching

The search for a new principal for the school has already begun.

Christine Uhrin, principal of Hanaford school for the past three years, will return to the classroom in September, Supt. Victor Mercurio confirmed on Friday. The process to find a new principal has already begun. Uhrin had been serving on a yearly basis since she was name principal in 2008. Before that, Uhrin was a sixth grade teacher at Eldredge School. Because she never officially relinquished her teaching position, she was able to request a return to the classroom. “I missed the teaching,” said Uhrin last week, in explanation of her move back to the classroom. She will be teaching fifth grade at Eldredge. Sixth graders move to Cole next year. Like several other teachers who had taught sixth grade but are not middle school certified, …

Podraza To Take Reins as EGHS Principal

The current vice principal aims to maintain the high school's top standards and compare EGHS students against the best nationally.

Hoping to "continue the tradition of excellence" and provide some stability in leadership that has been lacking at East Greenwich High School in recent years, vice principal Michael Podraza will take the reins as principal after this academic year. The East Greenwich School Committee unanimously approved Podraza's appointment Tuesday night, establishing a permanent principal for the first time since Jeannine Nota left the position last July after just two years. The school has been led by two interim principals this year: former Cole Middle School principal Joe Militello for the first semester and former Barrington High School principal John Gray for the second. "There's been a lot of turnover," Podraza said, noting he has served under …

Search Narrows For New High School Principal

School Committee interviewed Assistant Principal Michael Podraza last week for the job.

Superintendent Victor Mercurio confirmed last week that the School Committee interviewed EGHS assistant principal Michael Podraza for the job of principal at the school. He said there were no plans to interview additional candidates. The high school has been without a permanent principal since Jeannine Nota left in July after two years on the job. The school has been led by two interim principals this year: former Cole principal Joe Militello was acting principal for the first semester and former Barrington High School principal John Gray has been acting principal this semester. The search for a permanent head started earlier this year, when the job was posted on a the teaching-job website School Spring. Mercurio had said previously that …

EGHS Principal For 2nd Semester Still Unnamed

Joe Militello will continue to serve as interim principal of East Greenwich High School through the end of the first semester in late January.

With interim High School Principal Joe Militello one month from completing his tour of duty at EGHS, Superintendent Victor Mercurio is looking for someone to fill the position for the second semester. Mercurio named Militello to the job in August, after Jeannine Nota resigned to return to Cranston, her former district. Militello, a longtime principal at Cole Middle School until his retirement in 2006, is only eligible to work in one district for 90 days a year to comply with state pension rules. That 90-day period is up the end of the semester. At Tuesday night's meeting, Mercurio updated the School Committee about finding another interim principal for next semester, and the search for a permanent principal. "We're looking for …
