EG will play Middletown in the D III championship game Sunday afternoon at Carcieri Field.
The East Greenwich Avengers came out strong Wednesday night against the Moses Brown Quakers at Carcieri Field, and stayed in front the entire game, winning 25-13 and a berth in the Super Bowl Sunday. The Avengers haven't been in a Super Bowl since 2006. They will play Middletown, the only team that's beaten EG this season. Middletown beat Narragansett 34-14 in their semi-final contest. The Avengers dominated the first half, with a touchdown by Carney Crawford (no extra point) in the first quarter and a TD by Meran Topalian in the second quarter. Down by six points at the half, the Avengers Boys Basketball team came back to beat the Quakers 62-52 Friday night. Brandon Eckles, a sophomore standout, was the night’s high scorer, with 18 points for EG. Possibly too pumped up by the large, cheering crowd that turned out for the third annual White Out game, the Avengers ran into foul trouble early, receiving more than a dozen fouls to the Quakers’ three in the first half, which ended with EG down 32-26 at the half. In the second half, the Avengers came back. Junior David Hopkins made three 3-pointers in a row, the last one tying the score. That was all EG needed. From there, they were able to pile on the points and widen their lead. Sophomore Ben Chester went 5 for 5 at the free throw …
