RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence Issues Statement After Stabbing

The Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence says stabbing today is a stark reminder "that we have a long way to go to achieve a Rhode Island that is free of domestic violence."

The following is from a statement issued by the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The Portsmouth Police Department has not released the name of the victim from Wednesday's fatal stabbing on a RIPTA bus in Portsmouth.  First and foremost, our hearts go out to the family, friends and community of Terry L. Chiodo. While her death marks the first murder to occur in Portsmouth in a decade and Rhode Island’s first domestic violence murder in 2013, it is also a stark reminder that we have a long way to go to achieve a Rhode Island that is free of domestic violence. This is a horrible thing that happened. Many women are scared to leave an abusive relationship because of death threats and such. But this woman did leave and was killed. I would like to think that the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which passed the house today, will make a difference in cases like this.
