Will Third Grade Move Up Next Year? Probably But Not Absolutely

Plans for the move are in the works, but school officials refuse to say it's a definite, pending final budget numbers.

For parents of East Greenwich second graders, one important piece of information they are looking for these days is whether or not their child will be attending a different school next fall.  The answer is probably, but school officials will offer no guarantees. The School Committee decided last year to move the third grade classes from Meadowbrook and Frenchtown to Hanaford and Eldredge but budget constraints caused them to postpone enactment. The move had been recommendation of a reconfiguration study of the elementary schools prompted by the move of the sixth grade from Hanaford and Eldredge to Cole Middle School. One factor in the plan's favor this year is the cost looks to be substantially lower. Last year, the district would have …

Third Graders To Stay Put Next Year

Bowing to budgetary and time constraints, the School Committee votes to recommend moving third graders to Eldredge, Hanaford in Sept. 2013.

A day after the Town Council passed a budget that requires the schools find $80,000 in additional cuts, the School Committee decided to postpone moving third graders to Hanaford and Eldredge for one more year. The panel voted 7-0 in favor of recommending the reconfiguration take place in September 2013 during a meeting Tuesday night in the library at Cole Middle School. At issue was the $125,000 price tag associated with moving the grades from Meadowbrook and Frenchtown schools. That includes $75,000 for an additional special education teacher, $20,000 for a part-time speech/language specialist, $10,000 for moving costs, and $20,000 for classroom set-up. Asst. Supt. Paula Dillon went into great detail Tuesday explaining why additional …

School Committee Tables School Reconfig, Recognizes Building Panel

The committee is slated to consider moving Meadowbrook Farms, Frenchtown third graders on April 24.

Parents from Meadowbrook Farms Elementary turned out at Tuesday's School Committee meeting to voice concerns for possible hazards to kids they believe school reconfiguration related to building construction may present. The School Committee is comtemplating moving third graders from Frenchtown and Meadowbrook to Hanaford and Eldredge. In the midst of that decision-making process, the panel is also planning to start major construction at Meadowbrook to alleviate stubborn moisure problems there. Meadowbrook parents backed the idea of moving second graders to Hanaford Elementary during construction at Meadowbrook to ease the impact of construction on students there. The committee placed reconfiguration on the agenda for April 24. A study of …

Panel Recommends Moving 3rd Grade To Hanaford, Eldredge

Such a move, however, would require about $100,000 added to a budget already $1.2 million higher than this year's.

Supt. Victor Mercurio laid out the groundwork, survey results, building requirements and challenges to elementary school grade reconfiguration, then presented the Grade Reconfiguration Panel recommendation anticipated from the beginning: Move the third grades from Meadowbrook and Frenchtown to Hanaford and Eldredge. The School Committee, which heard the presentation during a meeting Tuesday night, will vote on the recommendation at a future meeting. The recommendation, coming on the same night that the School Committee voted to approve a $33.7 million budget for 2013, contains some additional costs the district can ill afford, including the addition of a full-time special education teacher and additional speech therapist help at Eldredge…

Why not close one school - Hanaford - and move all of the 4th & 5th grades to one school? Wouldn't that save money instead of expend it???   more ›

Full-Day Kindergarten Not Planned For Next Year

The real work of grade configuration is just beginning, but adding full-day K is not on the agenda.

Discussions at PTG meetings and student pick-up about next year's student placement have left some parents wondering if the district talk of reconfiguration would include full-day kindergarten. But school administrators say that full-day K is not part of this year's discussion. Instead, the focus will be on whether or not to move third grade classes from Meadowbrook and Frenchtown to Hanaford and Eldredge. Supt. Victor Mercurio will be naming a subcommittee to research class and school configurations. It would not, Mercurio stressed, be looking at redistricting.  "The subcommittee will look at what works best for all schools in East Greenwich," said Mercurio. He said the subcommittee will research how moving third graders up to Hanaford …
