Eric Lonergan and Mary Najarian, both of North Kingstown, are the first man and woman to cross the finish line at the 5K Saturday in downtown East Greenwich.
It happened to be Mary Najarian's 23rd birthday Saturday and perhaps that gave the North Kingstown resident the extra push needed to finish the Hill and Harbour Turkey Trot 5K strong, since she captured first place for women with a time of 20:07. Eric Lonergan, 27, also of North Kingstown, took first place overall, with a winning time of 16:08. They were among the more than 500 participants in the 5K, with another 100-plus participating in the one-mile Fun Run. Temperatures were cool but dry, with a stiff wind in the open areas of the course, runners said. Overall, East Greenwich test scores remain at the top of the state; officials say it will take longer to “drill down” for more pertinent data.
When the NECAP standardized test scores from fall 2011 were released earlier this month, East Greenwich remained at the top of districts across the state. Analyzing the data for real trends, however, is an enormous challenge, school administrators said. That’s because year-to-year comparisons pit different students against each other. For instance, math scores for third graders at both Frenchtown and Meadowbrook are down from last year (84 percent proficiency for both schools in 2011 compared to 85 percent (Meadowbrook) and 88 percent (Frenchtown) in 2010.
