Sandy Damage At Rocky Hill Part Of Chafee's Federal Disaster Aid Request

The Potowomut private school estimates damage from the hurricane could cost up to $70,000.

Rocky Hill School's spectacular location – at the mouth of the Greene River where it flows into Narragansett Bay – is usually a selling point. But for two years in a row, the school has suffered damage at that hands of severe storms, first Irene, in 2011, and then Sandy, in October, precisely because of that prize location. "We're on the water. Narragansett Bay is right there," acknowledged the school's business manager, Mark Buckley. But they do appear to be in line to get some help with the possibly $70,000 in damage from Sandy, following last week's federal disaster declaration for Kent County. Sandy hit RHS harder than Irene. Both brought down tree limbs, but Sandy managed to pull up and peel back the rubber roof liner on the school's…

this is the reason why we are all broke. is there any reason why the town cant pay for that? Are you telling me that chafee asked for money to fix 1 school? He should try a few other city schools thats had water dripping from their ceilings for years before he looks elsewhere. I have been to the beaches the day after the hurricane, and i fail to see a disaster. Why not just close that school like…   more ›

Exploring Nature On The Potowomut

Fourth and fifth graders at Rocky Hill School get to spend two days exploring the nature of the Potowomut River.

Each spring, Rocky Hill School’s fourth and fifth grade students take part in a two-day outdoor educational program that includes a canoe trip on the Potowomut River, science-based learning activities, small-group dynamic challenges and personal reflections. Fifth graders even get to campout on school grounds. “It’s sort of their big right of passage, it’s the thing they look forward too,” said chaperone Beth DeGerlia. The group of fourth and fifth grade students, teachers and parents began the trip by canoeing up the Potowomut River to a spot where teachers offer a variety of workshops related to the theme of science. After the workshops, the students continued canoeing up the river to another spot where they had lunch and conducted some…

Cranston's Farrell Propels Rocky Hill to 3-2 Win

Senior co-captain Zeke Farrell of Cranston scored two goals in a 3-2 win over Brimmer and May on Wednesday.

The Rocky Hill School boys’ varsity soccer team hosted Brimmer and May from Chestnut Hill, Mass., in a New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class D tournament quarterfinal match Wednesday afternoon.  Less than 20 minutes into the match, senior co-captain Zeke Farrell of Cranston scored his 15th goal of the season. That score held until halftime as Rocky Hill dominated the majority of play.  Midway through the second half, however, two quick goals by the visiting team caught the Rocky Hill defense off guard. With memories of last year’s home quarterfinal loss against Bancroft in mind, several veterans (including the coaches) asked if history really would rear its ugly head. Rocky Hill School Turns It All Off

As part of “Green Week,” Rocky Hill's high school turned off all lights and technology for a full day.

On any given day, when you walk into Rocky Hill's high school, you are greeted with a flatscreen TV displaying daily announcements as well as pictures and videos of recent school events. Projectors show class notes and presentations and students take notes on their laptops. One day last week, however, the experience was quite different as the school went off the grid. Almost all the lights in the building were off and laptops or projectors were off limits. The Defenders, a student club that advocates environmentally-friendly activities, helped to organize “Green Week.” The week was an effort to increase awareness of the human impact on the environment and to demonstrate ways to lessen that impact. “Some of the teachers had a really hard …
