America's Cup World Series on the Horizon

We've put together everything you need to know about the America's Cup World Series, going on from June 26 to July 1 at Fort Adams in Newport.

On Tuesday, thousands of sailing enthusiasts will flock to the America's Cup Village at Fort Adams in Newport to watch nine teams compete in the last stop of the America's Cup World Series races. The circuit of regattas is the culmination of a year's worth of work from Newport and the entire state of Rhode Island. “It's a team effort, but we have been working with literally hundreds of people to prepare for various festivities,” Discover Newport CEO Evan Smith said. “One of the real wow factors here is seeing the transformation of Fort Adams. I'm really jazzed for everyone to see it.” For several months, crews have turned Fort Adams into a state-of-the-art home base for the teams and spectators. Free Boating Education Seminars At West Bay Yacht Club

Weekly events into March will get you ready for the sailing season.

West Bay Yacht Club, located next to McKinley’s Pub at 1 Division St. in East Greenwich, hosts free seminars targeted for boating enthusiasts. These seminars are open to the public so even if you are not member, we welcome you to join us! Splicing Seminar, Thursday, Feb. 9: Splicing a boat line is something that every boater should be able to do. You can buy lines that already have an eye spliced, but that limits you to pre-cut sizes. They are also more expensive then doing your own, 7 p.m. Beginner’s Sewing, Saturday, Feb. 18: Whether it’s for upholstery repair or for cutting down or altering sails, sewing can come in handy for all boat owners. Planning Board: Members will discuss recommendations to the Zoning Board of variance applications for two different parcels on South County Trail. CJ Buckley Regatta Sails On Through 9th Year With Good Winds

Thirty-six teams competed in the 9th Annual CJ Buckley Regatta, hosted by Greenwich Bay Sailing Association.

Calm waters and almost non-existent winds delayed the final day of sailing in the 9th Annual CJ Buckley Regatta, but the 36 teams competing were fired up and ready to go early Wednesday morning. Good winds had made for an exciting race Tuesday, and the sailors were eager to face off again. The regatta, hosted by the East Greenwich Yacht Club and the Greenwich Bay Sailing Association, has become a significant race, attracting teams from around the state and even as far as Bermuda. It is held in memory of CJ Buckley, who passed away in December 2002 at the age of 17. CJ was an avid sailor and particularly fond of the strategy involved in team racing. EG Yacht Club's Annual Regatta Benefits Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Near perfect conditions prevail as over 40 boats fly around the course.

Some are walkers, some are bicyclists, others swim. Yesterday, the sailors got in the charitable act by racing 40 boats around Narragansett Bay with the beneficiary being the Rhode Island Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (RILLS). The East Greenwich Yacht Club's (EGYC) annual regatta took place under near perfect conditions with breezes out of the northwest at 15 knots and seas under 1 foot. The course ran from just south of Patience Island, down to Quonset, over to the north tip of Jamestown, and back - approximately 15 miles. The regatta's steering committee was inspired by a visit to the club in April by ESPN Commentator Gary Jobson. Udo Schroff, also a Lymphoma survivor, suggested that the regatta become a charitable event …

West Bay Yacht Club Holds Race Management Seminar

Experienced and newcomer s to racing welcome for day of training, certification testing.

Ever dream of sailing away, and fast?  If so, head on over to the West Bay Yacht Club as it sponsors a Race Management Seminar for US Sailing Race Officer Training and Certification with the US Sailing Race Management Committee on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The open-to-the-public seminar is designed for people who have some race committee experience, but Racing Committee Chairperson Grant Brandon said newcomers, as well as sailors who belong to other yacht clubs, are also welcome. “This seminar is specifically designed for individuals who participate in running and/or managing races for their respective yacht club as part of the Race Committee team who, more often than not, are volunteers who devote an extraordinary amount of time …
