iPads For All EGHS Students Would Cost $550,000

Advantages include ability to better gear course material to each individual student as well as up-to-date material; outcome data scarce.

Teachers and administrators from East Greenwich High School gave a lengthy presentation to the School Committee Tuesday night about the benefits of providing every student at the school with their own iPad.  The only catch? It won't come cheap. According to Supt. Victor Mercurio, the total cost of the one-time purchase of iPads for the entire school would be $550,750 – including the iPads themselves, protective casing, and professional development for teachers.  In addition, Mercurio said, the district would want to add one full-time and one half-time staff member to support the endeavor, at a total cost of about $100,000. That may or may not be temporary, he said. Each student would "own" their iPad, so new purchases for incoming …

We are big fans in this house of the Google Nexus tablet, brand new half the cost of the Ipad. Further I'd like to see some consideration for open source software. I would think one of the biggest things is licensing software for so many tablets, I use Open Office and LibreOffice with rarely a problem. To piggyback on Eric's comment, Google Drive at least lets kids keep their work on the cloud as…   more ›

New School Policy Does Away With Seniority-Only Teacher Placements

Union representatives say any changes need to be negotiated.

In a 6-0 vote Tuesday night, the School Committee approved a new personnel policy that eliminates using senority as the sole criteria for teacher hiring and placement.  Committeewoman Mary Ellen Winter was absent. School Committee Chair David Green said the action came in an effort to align EGSD policy with the state Department of Education's Basic Education Program, or BEP. The BEP calls for "an effective human capital management system," according to a 2009 letter from Education Commissioner Deborah Gist to superintendents. In that letter, Gist highlighted the language in the BEP (which was enacted by Gist's predecessor, Peter McWalter) that reads, "each LEA shall maintain control of its ability to recruit, hire, manage, evaluate and …

If EG wants to evaluate teachers by the growth of students they might be in violation of Rhode Island law. This can not be part of an effective human capital management system because growth tests are not designed to tell what part of the growth is attributable to the teacher.   more ›

Resident Says Bus Drop Off On Tanglewood Too Dangerous

Bruce Fox says middle school children have to negotiate the traffic caused by parents picking up their kids.

Bruce Fox grew up at 120 Tamarack Drive and lives there now, so he's no stranger to the traffic that collects there come 7:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays during the school year. He's used to kids crossing over his property on their way to or from East Greenwich High School.  That he can live with. What he doesn't like is that beginning of this school year, a middle school bus stop was changed so that his 12-year-old and at least two other Cole Middle School students are dropped off at Tanglewood Drive at Larch Road have to navigate the traffic to get from the drop-off point to their homes. At Tuesday night's School Committee meeting, Fox asked School Committee members to reinstate the old bus stop, which dropped children off at the …

State Aid To EG Schools Higher In Coming Year, Officials Say

School officials tell the Town Council at a budget session Monday they will probably receive $2.2 million in state aid next year – up more than $400,000 over current year funding.

For years, East Greenwich elected officials have cried foul when it came to state funding allocations, arguing the town did not get its fair share. The state may have gotten the message. School officials told the Town Council Monday night at what was billed as a "pre-budget meeting," it looked very probable schools would receive $425,000 more than last year in state aid to education. EGSD Director of Administration Mary Ann Crawford said the figure should stay unchanged, unless state legislators decide to dismantle the education funding formula – unlikely since it only came about last year after several years of effort. That said, with built-in add-ons, the EGSD budget – by far the largest portion of the town's expenditures – will go up 3…

Five Things: Town-School Budget Meeting

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Jan. 7.

School Committee/Town Council meeting: A “pre-budget” discussion is on the agenda … in other words, the budget discussions for Fiscal Year 2014 (which starts July 1) begin! Weather: It’ll be in the 30s today but is supposed to be in the 40s during the day for the rest of the week. Goodbye snow. Outdoor Ice Skating: The town’s two rinks are open for skating – the plus from all the recent cold weather. One rink, pictured here, is downtown, at the basketball courts at the bottom of Eldredge Field. The other is at Shovlin Park, off Middle Road. You must bring your own skates and there’s no zamboni, but it’s free and glorious to be able to skate outdoors! With the newly warmer temperatures, it’s better to skate early or late in the day. …
