The survey of parents about possible changes in the school calendar will be used when planning for the 2014-15 school year.
Next year, anyway, school vacations will remain the same. There will still be weeklong breaks in February and April. There will still be days off for Rosh Hoshanah and Good Friday. School will still start the Wednesday before Labor Day. The School Committee approved the calendar for 2013-14 at their meeting Tuesday night. That calendar has the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 28. It has the last day (supposing no "snow" days) as Friday, June 13, 2014. That could change in subsequent years, depending on the results of a survey the School Committee plans to send out to parents this spring. The Blizzard of 2013 closed schools Friday and Monday.
The mini-mid-winter break is over. The good news (for some, anyway!) is the real winter break is just four days away. The Blizzard of 2013 prompted school officials in East Greenwich and across the region to cancel school last Friday, in anticipation of the storm's arrival. Classes in East Greenwich were cancelled Monday because two schools remained without power Sunday afternoon and because roads needed additional clearing to make room for buses, cars and pedestrians. Both of those issues have been resolved, so school is back in session Tuesday. Better get to that homework, everyone! The Blizzard of 2013 prompts a second day of no school for students in East Greenwich and most of Rhode Island.
There will be no school for East Greenwich public school students Monday, Feb. 11. Power has been restored to much of the town, but as of 4 p.m. Sunday, both Meadowbrook and East Greenwich High School remained without power. In the recorded phone message that went out to families, Supt. Victor Mercurio said, "Due to power outages associated with the storm, there will be no school Monday." Even if power had been restored, however, Town Manager Bill Sequino had said opening the schools might not have been safe, with roadways still clogged with snow. On Monday, town DPW crews will be widening the roads, making it easier for cars, buses, and pedestrians.
Life is getting back to normal, but power outages, rain tomorrow are still causing problems.

Supt. Victor Mercurio said he was concerned about releasing students – and staff – into a blizzard.
With a major snow storm bearing down on the region, Supt. Victor Mercurio has cancelled school for Friday. The latest forecast has snow beginning overnight tonight into Friday with the heaviest snowfall due to begin Friday afternoon. "I'm concerned about dismissing students into a storm," he said Thursday before making his decision. Police Chief Tom Coyle had encouraged Mercurio to cancel school. This will be the third day of cancelled classes this year.

It's the note from school nobody wants to get: your child has head lice. Yet, it happens to many of us, so many in fact, you'd think the stigma would be gone. But it persists. One EG parent had to deal with lice this past fall. When she heard about another case, she decided to use the instance as a teachable – and with any luck, lice-free – moment. The planned Nov. 1 day off for teacher conferences and in-service training is cancelled.
After three days off because of power outages caused by super-storm Sandy on Monday, the East Greenwich Public Schools will reopen Thursday. Supt. Victor Mercurio made the annoucement just after 6 p.m. Wednesday night. The school calendar had originally scheduled a day off for Thursday, Nov. 1 – for parent-teacher conferences at the elementary schools and in-service training for teachers at Cole and EGHS. But in light of the three unplanned days off, Mercurio announced Tuesday that Thursday would be a regular school day if power came back on. No make-up dates yet for parent-teacher conferences.

There will be no school tomorrow, Halloween, in East Greenwich for the third day in a row. According to Supt. Victor Mercurio, three schools – Frenchtown and Meadowbrook elementarys and East Greenwich High School – are still without power from super-storm Sandy, which hit the region Monday, Oct. 29. Because of that, school is cancelled for the entire district. If power is restored Wednesday, school will be held on Thursday, despite an previously scheduled day off for conferences, Mercurio said. East Greenwich Public Schools will be closed Monday due to Hurricane Sandy. Supt. Victor Mercurio said a call would go out to parents at 4:30 p.m. Citing concerns about the projected severity of Hurricane Sandy, Mercurio said school would be closed but there's no word yet about Tuesday.
