EGHS Students Get Their Hands Dirty

On Wednesday morning, members of EGHS successfully planted over 3,000 daffodil bulbs along the half-mile length of Avenger Drive.

During the EGHS advisory period, from 10:15 to 11:18 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, students from all grades flocked to Avenger Drive with a single purpose in mind: planting flower blubs. And plant they did. Sponsored by the EGHS Student Council with help from the Environmental Club, over 3,000 daffodil bulbs were purchased, with the intent beautifying Avenger Drive. Come spring, that stretch of roadway will no longer be the barren stretch of road we're all so used to, but rather covered on both sides with beautiful daffodil blooms. Under sunny skies and with crisp air around us, EGHS students and staff (and even some parents) enjoyed the hour outside. "It was a nice change to what we usually do with our hour of advisory," said junior Kyra …

5 Things You Need To Know Today

Five Things: School, School And ... School

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Aug. 29.

First Day of School pictures: The backpack’s already set (last time that will happen this year!), outfit’s picked out, pre-first-day-day jitters in full swing. Make sure you get a photo and upload it here. If you don’t have a school-age child, upload a photo of you on the first day of school. Bus schedules: If you need a bus schedule, here’s a link to all the EG public school schedules and schedules for OLM and Rocky Hill schools. And keep in mind that buses tend to be LATE during the first week of school. Hang in there! EG Food Cupboard needs donations: People are hungry all year round, Chris and Steve Bartlett of the Food Cupboard remind us. Items especially needed are jars of jelly, baked beans, canned fruit, tuna, peanut butter, and …

Elbow Grease, Long Hours At Meadowbrook As First Day Looms

"The plan is to be open Wednesday morning on schedule," says Meadowbrook principal Neil Marcaccio.

It may not look perfect, but Meadowbrook Farms School should be ready to open Wednesday, Aug. 29, for the first day of school, said Principal Neil Marcaccio Monday. Nearly everyone who works at the elementary school showed up for work Sunday, Aug. 26, the first chance they had to put their school back together after a summer of abestos abatement and construction to resolve decades-old moisture problems. "The plan is to be open Wednesday morning on schedule," Marcaccio said. "I feel very good about the progress that's been made based on where we started Sunday morning. The change has exceeded my expections." Even so, he acknowledged there's much to be done and a couple of late nights ahead. He said the staff has been great. "They've …

Students Elect 2012-13 Class Council Officials

EGHS students elected their class officials for Class Council next year

With the conclusion of one school year comes the preparation for the next. At EGHS, this means school elections. Posters plastered around the school, rumors swirling in the hallways, it all leads up to an advisory period of speeches and then the actual voting process.  This year, speeches were filled with hope for the coming year, as well as some outrageous comments. Andrew Miner, president of the class of 2014 said, “I stuffed my bra for this class!” referring to his role in the school play. But also carried on the theme of hope with saying, “We need to continue on the path we have set this year.”  Commitment was a prevalent theme in the class of 2015 elections, with president Gabby Granatiero pointing out, “Class Council is more than an…

Barrington Studies Later School Start Time For Teens

A forum on the issue Thursday night featured EG resident Dr. Richard Millman, a childrens' sleep specialist.

Changing the start times for Barrington schools only works if students get more sleep. A childrens’ sleep specialist, Dr. Richard Millman of Hasbro Children's Hospital, repeated that statement numerous times on Thursday night, Jan. 26, at a forum in the high school auditorium titled “Changing School Start Times: A Good Idea for Barrington?” “You have to go to bed at the same time,” Millman said of teens, “or everything stays the same.” Millman, who lives in East Greenwich, was referring to sleep deprivation, which he said all teens suffer from. So, any extra amount of sleep helps, he said. The doctor was joined as a guest speaker by Lisa Bogan of the Connecticut League of Women Voters, recognized as an expert on school start times, and a …

National Mentoring Month: EG Celebrates Its Mentors, Seeks More

At a breakfast earlier this month, several mentors talked about why they mentor.

Don Mong mentors with an eye on the future. “The boy I’m with now, he is just crazy smart and he has an imagination,” said Mong. “Who knows, he may be THE one who will invent some computer program 20 years from now. I look at mentoring as not building for today, but building for tomorrow. You can’t build a house unless you build a foundation.” Don is just one of dozens of people who are mentoring East Greenwich students through the Strategic Support Mentoring Program run by Nina Mackta (with lots of assistance from Linda Horenstein). He and other mentors joined Mackta and Horenstein at a special brunch at T’s earlier this month in honor of National Mentoring Month. Mong started mentoring two years ago, after retiring after 22 years as an …

Rants and Raves

What, Oh What, To Pack For Lunch & Loving The Showcase

What to love and hate about East Greenwich this week.

RANT: Welcome back. I don’t know where from. From the dog days of summer. From roadside fruit stands and daily ice creams. From long hazy summer weekends and languorous lazy afternoons at the beach. But welcome back. That summer border holiday, Labor Day, was last weekend. So the white shoes have been put away and the days are about to settle into a daily rut – oops, I mean, routine. I still greet September as if I am still about to return to school. I whip myself into a flurry of activity, making plans, promises and lists – all of which I am determined to keep. I am brim - and perhaps, not a little brim - with Resolve and Resolution. In the monthly rhythm of my life, the year begins now. So happy new year! Of course, it’s the kids who are…

Rec Leagues, Boosters Seek Voice In Fields Use

Mike Feeney returns to the field project deliberations.

Mike Feeney went before the School Committee Tuesday night at Hanaford School to ask that the newly reconstituted Fields Committee be involved in drafting a use policy for the high school fields. Feeney, who headed the Fields Committee before and during construction of the high school fields, argued that the entire reason the Fields Committee was established was to improve communication between all the different user groups of the town fields. Pre-Fields Committee, Feeney said, who was using what field when (including the fields maintenance crew) was not known to all the participants, often causing confusion. School Committee Chairwoman Deidre Gifford agreed that those voices should be heard with regard to the fields MOU. "The committee …

I believe the additions to the high school fields, softball included, are necessary. The Varsity softball field doesn't even have bleachers and there are no bathroom facilities. I went to a fundraising event a while back and bought a brick that was supposed to have my daughters name and graduating year on it (there were atleast 75 bricks sold). They were supposed to be placed around the …   more ›
