R.I. Senate Passes EGFD Takeover Bill

Step by step, inch by inch, the demise of the East Greenwich Fire District and creation of a town fire department draws closer.

It's all over but the governor's signature. And possibly another quick vote or two in the General Assembly. Depends who you talk to. What's known for sure is the state Senate passed 35-0 legislation that would abolish the East Greenwich Fire District and make way for a town fire department. That follows a similar outcome in the state House last week. The bills are identical, with no traditional "reconciling" to be done. Still, there are two bills. The governor will sign only one. Which one?  But that is a parlor game. The fact is, sometime soon, Gov. Chafee will very much more than likely sign into law a bill calling for the 216-year-old East Greenwich Fire District to cease to exist.  That all this takes place just as the budget for …

Senate Dist. 35: Hodgson Ahead With Most Precincts Counted

State Sen. Dawson Hodgson leads by more than 2,000 votes over Win Hames; Dist. 35 includes parts of East Greenwich, North Kingstown, South Kingstown and Narragansett.

In the race Senate Dist. 35, arguably the most strangely configured district in Rhode Island, incumbent Dawson Tucker Hodgson looks to have won re-election over Winters B. Hames III, with all but two precincts (one each in South Kingstown and Narragansett) reporting. Hodgson, a Republican, had 7,272 votes by midnight Tuesday. Hames, a Democrat, had 5,181 votes. The totals include all the votes from East Greenwich and North Kingstown. According to the R.I. Board of Elections website, in South Kingstown, 11 out of 12 precincts had reported vote totals as of 11:50 p.m. In Narragansett, 6 out of 7 precincts were in by 11:50 p.m. Senate Dist. 35 includes most of East Greenwich, part of North Kingstown, part of Narragansett, and a small piece …

House Dist. 30 Debate Highlights Contrasts Among Candidates

Moderated by ABC 6 newsman Mark Curtis, the debate centered on solving the state’s economic woes.

The three candidates vying to be the next state representative for District 30 met in debate Wednesday night at the Varnum Armory, moderated by ABC 6 newsman (and East Greenwich resident) Mark Curtis. Independent candidate Kevin McDonough emphasized his 30 years of business experience and his lack of party ties, while Republican Anthony Giarrusso spoke of the need for more jobs the state and few Democrats in the General Assembly, and Democrat Mark Schwager highlighted his years of town government experience and command of the issues. While the debate, sponsored by the Republican and Democratic town committees and East Greenwich Patch, was a largely friendly affair, there were moments of stark contrast between candidates. In one instance, …

Hames Brings Years Of Local Involvement To Senate Run

The Narragansett Democrat says he'll be able to get things done at the State House.

Narragansett Democrat Winters B. Hames III said he's looking to unseat Republican Dawson Hodgson in the race for state Senate District 35 because as a Democrat he'll be able to get more done. "I think I could do a better job than Dawson," Hames said in a phone interview Monday. "I can work with the Democrats that are there. It’s very difficult for a member of the minority to get things done. Look at Dawson’s legislative record. You don’t get things accomplished that have to get accomplished." [You can find Hodgson's 2012 legislative record here.] This is not Hames's first run for elected office. In 1986, he lost a bid for state Representative, and he's been on the ballot for Town Council "several times" he said. He serves as chair of the …

I'd like to contact Mr Hames. He and I were roommates at the University of Florida back in 1964-65 or thereabouts. I typed his name into google just for fun and here I am. Does anyone know his e-mail? Mine is jstack1@tampabay.rr.com. Gerry Stack II   more ›

Hodgson Says Work Today Will Pay Off Years From Now

The Republican Senator for District 35 is running for re-election.

As a member of the small Republican minority in the state Senate, Dawson Hodgson said his job isn’t to rack up lots of big legislative accomplishments. Rather, Hodgson sees his role as setting the stage for fundamental change in Rhode Island state government. "The payoff for what I'm doing now is going to be long, long after I'm gone," he said. Hodgson, who is running for re-election to Senate Dist. 35 against Democrat Winters B. Hames III, lives in North Kingstown with his wife and two young sons on the farm that’s part of the family turf business, Sodco. A lawyer, he spent four years working in the state Attorney General’s office before deciding to run for state Senate two years ago. Today, he helps to manage the turf business. Senate …

Commission Passes Redistricting Plans; EG Back To 2 Senate Districts After All

Original maps had EG split into 4 state Senate districts.

The R.I. Reapportionment Commission approved new maps for the Congressional and state House and Senate districts at a hearing Monday night at the State House. The maps are redrawn every 10 years, following completion of the U.S. Census. There will be an additional hearing to consider minor “pocket” changes  Thursday. Votes in favor of the state House and Senate district maps were unanimous; the vote on the U.S. Congressional district was closer, 11-6. “I think it’s a good compromise,” said Commission co-chair Stephen Ucci (D-District 42, Cranston, Johnston). “Again, not everybody’s going to be happy with it. This turned out to be a lot more difficult than I thought it would be.” For East Greenwich, the news was favorable - Senate district…
