OLM Science Olympiad Team Will Head To Nationals Again

They won the state Science Olympiad contest in April for the sixth time in eight years.

Our Lady of Mercy School's Science Olympiad team has done it again – for the sixth time in the past eight years, it has won the Rhode Island Science Olympiad middle school championship. But it's more than that. The OLM team dominated the competition, placing fourth or higher in 21 out of the 23 events.  The team, made up of 20 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, will travel to Dayton, Ohio, for the national competition, which begins May 18. With 8 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals on the state level, OLM placed fourth or higher in 21 out of 23 events and medaled (placed third or better) in 15 events. Unified Volleyball Earns State Crown

The win caps a perfect season and follows a national championship last May.

Unified sports are relatively new on the scene, but the EGHS Unified Volleyball team has already got two feathers in its cap, with a national championship last spring and now a state championship.  The Avengers defeated Chariho 25-19, 25-12, in the state final on Nov. 3 at Portsmouth High School, capping a perfect season.  The team, undefeated during the regular season with a record of 7-0, had to get past the formidable Bishop Hendricken in the semi-final round. They continued their winning streak in straight sets against Hendricken, 31-29 and 25-22. By beating Chariho, they finished the season with a 9-0 record.
