Presidents’ Day – what's closed: Banks and government offices are closed today. Most everything else is open. The holiday was established in 1885 to honor George Washington (his birthday is Feb. 22), but morphed into a day of recognition for all U.S. presidents when it was moved to the third Monday in February in 1971.
