Presidents’ Day – what's closed: Banks and government offices are closed today. Most everything else is open. The holiday was established in 1885 to honor George Washington (his birthday is Feb. 22), but morphed into a day of recognition for all U.S. presidents when it was moved to the third Monday in February in 1971. A Brand New I.D.E.A.

The Tea Party and Occupy movements have galvanized a small percent of the country; maybe I.D.E.A. could convince the rest of us to switch off the football game for a while.

I’ve got an idea. It has to do with the Occupy Wall Street rallies as well as the emergence of the Tea Party over the last few years. Both of these initiatives emanate from the angst of millions of Americans who are concerned about finances, war, immigration, wealth distribution, ineffective representation and a host of other issues. While my idea is based on the wonderful energy of the previously mentioned grassroots efforts – it is also one that broadly represents many folks of my ilk – everyday middle America. To begin with, the idea I’m alluding to is actually a movement (sort of). I’ve chosen to call this potential movement I.D.E.A. (Individualized Democracy Embracing America).
