EGHS Teacher Fran Healy Awarded 'Golden Apple'

The special education teacher was nominated by one of her students.

When Patrice Wood from Channel 10 arrived at her classroom last week, East Greenwich special education teacher Fran Healy assumed she was there for someone else. "I was completely surprised," Healy said later. Wood was there to give Healy a Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching. Healy was a little embarrassed by the hoopla, saying the award should go to all her fellow teachers.  But there was one aspect of the award that really pleased her – the nomination came from one of her students.  Julia Slavin joined Healy's class last year. Initially, she was less than a model student.  "I had a major attendence problem," Slavin admitted. "She went out of her way to make sure I got to school," Slavin said of Healy. Kate MacGunnigle Leaves Eldredge After 23 Years

“This building is the most wonderful place in the world to work,” says MacGunnigle, who is retiring from teaching to care for her mother

Tuesday is the first day of school - and it will be the first day of school in 23 years that Mrs. MacGunnigal isn’t welcoming a new class of students at James H. Eldredge School. Kate MacGunnigle has retired, effective Aug. 31, after 24 years in the district, 23 of those years at Eldredge. Eldredge was very much MacGunnigle’s school. It was her family's neighborhood school too. In fact, her two children - Doug and Alison - attended Eldredge while she was a teacher there. “My kids didn’t know what to call me,” she said, Mom or Mrs. MacGunnigle.
