Power Still Out More Than 400 In EG

Town Manager Sequino gives updates on the power situation and trash and debris pickup, post Sandy.

While many in East Greenwich who lost power in Superstorm Sandy had gotten it back by Thursday morning, but more than 400 households were still in the dark, reported Town Manager Bill Sequino. Of those, he said, half were "small pockets" that National Grid may not even know about. Because of that, Sequino encouraged anyone who has a neighbor still in the dark to contact National Grid. The power company focuses first on the power lines that affect the largest number of customers, Sequino said, but now that the major outages have been fixed, crews can turn their attention to smaller outages. Meanwhile, trash pickup is now delayed one day, after collection for both Monday and Tuesday was taken care of Wednesday. So, if your trash is usually …

5 Things You Need To Know Today

Five Things: Labor, Market, Trash

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Sept. 3.

EG Farmers Market: Celebrate Labor Day with a trip to our own farmers market, where the labor results in items for our table. Parking can get crowded around Rector Street, so stow your car in the parking lot by Swift Community Center and walk across the field. From 3 to 6 p.m. Labor Day: Most of us think of this as an end-of-summer holiday. But of course it’s a celebration of the American worker. So, Happy Labor Day American workers – we honor you! No trash pickup today: And because there’s no pickup today, that means trash pickup for the whole week is delayed one day. So, if you usually have trash pickup on Mondays, this week it will be Tuesday. If you usually have trash pickup on Fridays, it will be on Saturday. End-Of-Summer Musical …

Letter to the Editor

Plastic Bags: Ocean State Eyesore

East Greenwich and other RI communities should ban plastic grocery bags.

With the State of Rhode Island boasting hundreds of miles of coastline and thousands of acres of public and state parks, the beauty of our environment is a precious resource to everyone in the Ocean State; protecting it should be a top priority. However, our state's natural beauty is threatened by plastic waste that gets into our waterways, parks, yards, and roadsides, and that clogs our landfills; with the help of plastic, the Johnston landfill is now the highest point in the state. Far too much of this trash comes from an unnecessary product used for just five minutes before being thrown away: disposable plastic grocery bags that threaten to take hundreds to thousands of years to photo-degrade. Nothing we use for just a few minutes …

Tired of Tired

7:57 am on Friday, February 17, 2012

Let's ban filtered cigarettes, coffee and beer, while we're at it. Let's not forget automobile tires, diapers, computers, television sets. In fact, let's ban everything that does not have zero environmental impact. Those evil plastic bags have been specially designed to disintegrate at a much faster rate than plastic beverage bottles.   more ›
