Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: EGHS Wall Of Honor Thanks

This year's event was full of stories of growing up in East Greenwich, going to EGHS, and all the little small town tidbits many of us love to hear and reminisce about.

Just want to thank everyone for making the 6th Annual East Greenwich High School Wall of Honor another huge success. The administration, the custodians and Aramark Foods all contributed to a great night. Close to 100 people were in attendance at the event, sponsored by Gammons Prudential Realty, to see Linda Catanio Alix, Peter DeRestie, Sr., Dr. Fred Procopio, former R.I. Governor Donald Carcieri, Rear Admiral Richard Bennis, and Anthony "Tar Tar" Ucci honored for their exploits both in school and out. Michael and Anna Zaino and Carl Hoyer received WOH Appreciation Awards for their contributions to the community. Kudos go to Chairman Bob Houghtaling and Athletic Director Chris Cobain, along with the voting committee of Jean Ann Guliano, …

New Members Of EGHS Wall Of Honor Announced

The induction ceremony takes place Wednesday, April 10, at East Greenwich High School.

A sports legend, a 9/11 hero, a former governor are among the six East Greenwich High School alumni to be added to the EGHS Wall of Honor this year. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 10, in the high school auditorium at 6 p.m. Here are the inductees: Anthony " Tar Tar " Ucci – Considered by many old-timers to be EG's only true athletic legend. Ucci was a larger-than-life character was EG's Ruthian-Thorpian sports hero back in the days when local semi-pro football was all the rage and attracted thousands to Sunday matchups.  Ucci attended EG schools, EG Academy and Warwick High and earned All-State honors in both football and baseball. It is amazing that of the three persons identified in this article, I had the opportunity to know one as a child, and graduate with the another. Having lived "below the hill", I remember "Tar Tar" as a larger than life man, not for his athletic prowess, but his generosity at the store. He was the candy man. My sisters and I would frequenty the store often. Those are fond memories. And then of …   more ›

Seven Added to EGHS Wall of Honor

They were honored Thursday night at a ceremony at East Greenwich High School.

Bruce Mastracchio, who came up with the idea for an East Greenwich High School Wall of Honor, originally proposed a statewide hall of fame for athletes.  When that proved to be too expensive, he approached the high school and revised the concept to include all the school’s graduates. And although East Greenwich is a small community, it seems to generate a lot of people who make significant contributions to society. Added to the Wall of Honor in 2012 during a ceremony Thursday night at the high school were: Angela Bertholdt Herzner of the Class of 1992, Judith A. Briggs of the Class of 1960, Rear Admiral Nevin P. Carr. Jr. of the Class of 1974, Frank Forster of the Class of 1966, Deidrda Kettelle of the Class of 1964, W. Everett Lundberg …
