We may not have the biggest debt – that honor does to Providence – but we do rank number two in per-capita debt, according to GoLocalProv.
What do East Greenwich, Providence and Woonsocket have in common? More than you might think. According to a story by Stephen Beale on GoLocalProv Friday, East Greenwich ranks second in per capita municipal debt, behind financially troubled Woonsocket, and just barely ahead of Providence. East Greenwich owes $68.5 million according GoLocalProv. While that sounds smallish compared to Providence's debt of $926 million – per capita, the two debts are only $8 apart. EG residents owe $5,209 per person; Providence residents owe $5,201. Only Woonsocket residents have it worse, at $6,112 in municipal debt per person. In addition to Town Manager Bill Sequino's role in Woonsocket, former elected official Vince Bradley is now serving on the West Warwick School Committee.
Town Manager Bill Sequino – named last week to head the newly formed Woonsocket Budget Commission – isn't the only person with East Greenwich connections suddenly in the middle of another community's budget crisis. Longtime EG Town Council and School Committee member Vince Bradley, who moved to West Warwick a few years ago, was appointed to the School Committee there three months ago, to fill a vacancy. Two years ago, the West Warwick Town Council cut the school budget 5 percent. A ruling on that is still in the courts. The schools used surplus money to fill the gap for two years. East Greenwich Town Manager to lead panel.

"Anything relating to fiscal matters is now the responsibility of the Budget Commission," said state Director of Revenue Rosemary Booth Gallogly. Also, she said, though every meeting of the Budget Commssion is not required to be public, "My preference is that all of the meetings be open meetings," she said. Gallogly turned the floor over to the members, who each took a moment to introduce themselves. The appointed Commission members are Peder Schaefer, Associate Director of the League of Cities and Towns; Sequino, and retired school business officer Dina Dutremble. By law, …

He found out at just after 4 Tuesday afternoon that he'd been tapped as a member of a 5-person committee.
East Greenwich Town Manager Bill Sequino has been named one of five members of a budget commission to help Woonsocket deal with urgent financial problems, Governor Lincoln Chafee announced Tuesday. Director of the Department of Revenue, Rosemary Booth Gallogly, made the appointments. The commission is the second of three possible steps – fiscal overseer, budget commission, and receiver – of state intervention under the Fiscal Stability Act of 2010. “Based upon Susanne Greschner’s finding that a budget commission should be appointed for the city, as well as my own familiarity of the current fiscal challenges being faced by Woonsocket, I have determined that the appointment of a budget commission is in the best interests of the city,” said …
