Quonset Air Show Canceled Due To Federal Budget Cuts

No sound of planes buzzing over EG the days leading up to and during the show ...

The 2013 Rhode Island Air National Guard Open House and Air Show has been canceled due to federal budget cuts. The Guard decided to nix this year's show after the U.S. Navy canceled the remainder of the Blue Angel's 2013 season due to the cuts – also known as the sequester. Six other military acts that were slated to perform during the 2013 show also pulled out of the program, forcing event organizers to assess the situation and, inevitably, cancel the entire show. "I want to thank all who have supported this long-standing event, planned and executed by the professionals of the Rhode Island National Guard," said Major General Kevin McBride, Adjutant General and Commanding General of the Rhode Island National Guard. "It is our intent to …

Actually the sequester was the idea of the White House, just google it and you will see the links (the WH, including the Press Secretary, has admitted several times it was their idea, and it was signed into law by Pres. Obama) . President Obama just miscalculated on the Republican's reluctance to cut defense spending, so hence the backtracking and fingerpointing. He was praising sequestration in …   more ›

VIDEO: Meet the Thunderbirds

Why is the "5" on the Thunderbirds' lead solo pilot's plane upside down?

The skies over coastal Rhode Island are going to get mighty noisy this week as the 21st Rhode Island National Guard Open House & Air Show gears up this coming Saturday and Sunday. The noisiest of the gaggle of performers this year is the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, who arrived into Quonset Tuesday morning in their F-16 fighter jets. This year's headliners, the Thunderbirds are set to perform both days in the afternoon sessions. The crew will be honoring Army Sgt. Michael Paranzino of Middletown as part of their "Fallen Warrior" salute. Paranzino's name will be seen on the gear door of the number one aircraft to honor the soldier, who died in 2010 after an IED attack. Six planes will be in the air for the Thunderbirds this weekend, but …

Rhode Island Air Show Sells Out

The sellout no doubt explains the traffic nightmare that was Route 4 yesterday.

Sold out. For the first time in its 21-year history, the Rhode Island National Guard Open House and Air Show sold out. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, with two hours left in the show and more than an hour before the Blue Angels were set to perform, the RI National Guard closed the show's gates to any additional visitors. According to multiple reports, traffic was backed up to Route 95 in Warwick with people trying to get into the show. For the thousands who did make it inside the gates, they were treated to performances by the Geico Skytypers, a race between John Klatt's ANG plane and Neal Darnell's jet truck, explosions and much more. For those who didn't make it into the show, check out our gallery and video above. Remember, there's always next …

I saw it firsthand driving North bound on 95. Traffic was backed up to at least the Airport Exit where I got off. And I saw it further North, so probably hitting Rt 37 Exit. Crazy!   more ›

Video: A Flight On 'Fat Albert'

A trip on the Blue Angel's "fat" plane.

It may not fly as fast or as nimbly as the F/A-18 Hornets, but the Blue Angels’ Fat Albert is definitely a showstopper. It was here this weekend with the rest of the Blue Angels as part of the R.I. National Guard's yearly air show at Quonset. This plane typically carries the cargo, equipment and support team for the Blue Angels, but it also does some entertaining in its spare time. With a maximum takeoff weight of 150,000 lbs, this C-130 pulls off maneuvers that would make your neighbor’s Corvette envious. During takeoff, the plane accelerates to nearly 200 mph at a 45-degree angle, causing passengers to feel two g’s of gravity. In other words, a 150-pound person feels like 300 pounds. The plane also rapidly drops its altitude, causing …

That Fat Albert almost left us "squashed flat" at is almost fell into our house roaring by at full speed overhead! I thought it was crashing! Scared the "stuffing" out of us.   more ›
