Tag, Football No Longer Allowed At Meadowbrook

Non-contact activities - soccer, foursquare - have taken their place.

The scene during recess at Meadowbrook Farms Elementary one day last week was one of happy children playing - on swings, slides, asphalt and grass. They do lots of things, but they don’t play football or tag, and haven’t since last year. “At recess time, we had a fair number of kids that would come in because of injuries,” said Meadowbrook Principal Ron Areglado. “We wanted them to be safe so that’s the reason for the decision to suspend tag and contact sports on the playground. “We have hopscotch, four square ... so the the children can be actively engaged without hurting one another,” Areglado said, calling the new options “purposeful play.” The faded foursquare boxes and hopscotch squares have been repainted and there are jump ropes …

I agree completely with BUSophomore. Currently at senior at EGHS, I attended Meadowbook and Hanaford. I have scars on my knees from always falling and cutting up my knees during recess. But so what? I'm fine! Sure, I probably went through a lot of pants (the knees used to always rip open when I would fall) and I probably spent a lot of time with the nurse, but I loved the nurse! Meadowbrook Principal To Stay Another Year

Ron Areglado came out of retirement in 2010 to serve as principal.

The School Committee voted to extend the contract for Meadowbrook Farms Principal Ron Areglado by another year during its meeting Tuesday. “He’s worked out really well,” said Vice Chairman Bob Durant after the meeting. Areglado first came on to serve as interim principal in April 2010. He was the second interim to serve as principal following the midyear departure of Tara McAuliffe and the plan was to hire someone on a permanent basis while interims finished out the year. As a retired school administrator - Areglado served as principal for two school in Warwick among other posts - he had agreed to serve on a temporary basis in order to be able to keep his pension.
