Playoffs begin Thursday at 7 p.m. at home on Carcieri Field.
The EGHS boy’s lacrosse team continued with aggressive offensive play and strong defense over the last two weeks of the regular season, kicked off by a 12-1 victory over Prout. The Avengers followed with a decisive 8-0 win over South Kingstown, followed by a 17-4 victory over Middletown played over two days due to rain and storm delays. The team wrapped up its regular season last Tuesday with a 13-0 shutout against Narragansett at home. At this point, the Avengers lead Division II at 13-0, followed closely by rival South Kingstown with an 11-2 record. According to the RIIL website, EGHS leads the entire league in wins and has averaged nearly 12 goals per game. The Avenger defense has also been strong, allowing an average of only 2 goals …

The gift from the Class of 2012 – a nearly life-size knight on a horse – has been delivered and is just inside the gates of Carcieri Field awaiting its permanent placement.
It's sitting just inside the gates of Carcieri Field, a 600-pound, 11-foot-tall statue of an Avenger on a rearing horse – the gift of the Class of 2012. The class recalled by their advisors at graduation last June as being larger than life has left a gift that will ensure they will not soon be forgotten. The metal statue came from Wynn Betts in Colorado. It was sent to Texas to have the Avenger welded in place and then driven across country in a U-Haul. It arrived in January. "I feel this was the perfect gift for our Class of 2012 to give to the school," said Chris Millman, class treasurer, via email. "By our senior year, we truly embodied the school spirit of true Avengers. It is symbolic for the growth and ability that all students …

On Wednesday morning, members of EGHS successfully planted over 3,000 daffodil bulbs along the half-mile length of Avenger Drive.
During the EGHS advisory period, from 10:15 to 11:18 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, students from all grades flocked to Avenger Drive with a single purpose in mind: planting flower blubs. And plant they did. Sponsored by the EGHS Student Council with help from the Environmental Club, over 3,000 daffodil bulbs were purchased, with the intent beautifying Avenger Drive. Come spring, that stretch of roadway will no longer be the barren stretch of road we're all so used to, but rather covered on both sides with beautiful daffodil blooms. Under sunny skies and with crisp air around us, EGHS students and staff (and even some parents) enjoyed the hour outside. "It was a nice change to what we usually do with our hour of advisory," said junior Kyra …

The Avengers are looking strong heading into the playoffs, which start next week.
East Greenwich and Westerly ended their only game of the regular season in a scoreless tie, bringing the Avengers Boys Soccer record to 5-2-5. "Out of 12 games, we've only lost 2," said EG Coach Pat McGuirl after the Monday game. "We've always had good games with Westerly. It's always a physical game and today was no exception." The game had playoff atmosphere to it, he said. "There was close back and forth, and it was low scoring." That could be a good thing, since the playoffs start next week and EG has secured a berth, though just what berth must still be worked out. "It's a very competitive division," said McGuirl, referring to Division II. Out of 16 teams, EG has the sixth-best record. "They're working hard. I'm not unhappy." At …

School Committee votes to allow parent group to construct dugouts on varsity baseball field.
The School Committee voted 5-1 Tuesday night to allow a nonprofit parent group to build two dugouts on the varsity baseball field at East Greenwich High School. Chair Deidre Gifford was the dissenting vote. The fields at EGHS were rebuilt in 2009. The old varsity baseball field had dugouts but, according to Mike Feeney, chair of the Fields Construction Committee during planning and most of the construction of the fields, dugouts were never part of the new fields design. “In a perfect world, it should have been included,” Feeney said about dugouts. “That was clearly a budget issue. That was not in the budget, just like field goal posts and the scoreboard.” Goal posts and a scoreboard were part of the fields project; Feeney was referring to…

The Falcons top EG twice on Thursday - with a 10-5 win in Game 1 and a 6-0 win in Game 2.
The Avengers Baseball team, who won five games in five days to help clinch their first Division 1 “Final Four” appearance - including back-to-back wins against Cranston East - lost two games yesterday to Cranston West, 10-5 and 6-0. After a lightning delay Wednesday night that postponed the first game of East Greenwich and Cranston West’s three-game playoff series, the game resumed yesterday where it left off Wednesday night with Cranston West winning 10-5 in the sixth inning. It was the second time in an as many years in which an Avengers playoff game was suspended. Last year, East Greenwich’s game versus Hendricken was suspended and resumed the next day due to fog. When Game 1 resumed, sophomore pitcher Ryan Gavin stifled Cranston West’s…

The baseball team edges Cranston East, 6-5 to make it to the D-1 semifinals for the first time ever
Going into Sunday's game at home all of the Avengers knew that it could be their last game together but they weren't ready for that just yet as they performed under pressure once again to slip by the Cranston East Thunderbolts, winning 6-5. The star of the game was David Hopkins, who said after the game, "We've been taking it one game at a time because we had to win four straight games to make it to the semifinals." That is exactly what the Avengers have done as they are now on a four-game winning streak while knocking out Lincoln, St. Rays and Cranston East this week. Sunday's game began with John Kalajian recording a couple of strikeouts for an easy first inning. The bottom of the first inning the Avengers started hitting right off the …

Busy week for Avenger spring athletes
Baseball: The Avenger baseball team started off the week strong once again with a shutout victory over Chariho as Chris Pogue pitched a complete game shutout and David Hopkins chipped in with a triple and scored run to lead the Avs to a 2-0 win. The team then traveled to Portsmouth on Wednesday and was winning the game 4-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Portsmouth Patriots knocked in 7 runs and then 3 more runs in the sixth inning to end up winning 10-4. The Avengers bounced back against divisional rival South Kingstown on Thursday in their third road game of the week. John Kalajian pitched the majority of the game to gain another win to his record and Jeremy Streich opened up the game right from the first inning by crushing…
