People Power And A Book Obsession

What to love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this week.

RAVE: I have no real opinion regarding school being open at Meadowbrook Farms School while the building rehab goes on. Scratch that.  I do have an opinion (surprise) but one that is entirely worthless since I have no kids who attend the school and so, my family is not directly involved. It does seem to me that the Cole students suffered no real ill effects from their experience of learning in a building site but then, I had no kids at that school either — so whadda I know? (That was a rhetorical question, EG Tom 33.)  Anyway, who can tell what does or doesn’t affect teens? That is, other than the sound of an adult’s voice — that, I can state from direct experience, has absolutely no affect on them. As for parents who have warned that they…

Friends of the EG Free Library meeting: The Friends of the East Greenwich Free Library will host a Meet and Greet Evening at the library tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Join them for wine and cheese and sweets. To encourage new membership, there will also be a small "members only" booksale. Help the Friends support our goal to raise awareness of what our library has to offer through the creation and sponsorship of interesting programs and services. New and old friends are welcome! Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, August 17.

Planning, Historic District meet: The Planning Board will meet in Council Chambers at Town Hall, while the Historic District Commission will meet across the hall in the conference room tonight, both at 7 p.m. Agendas for both are attached. AARP safe driving course: Adults 55 and over are invited to take this refresher course in defensive driving, sponsored by the AARP. Successful completion of the course qualifies those over 55 for a discount on auto insurance. The class will be held at Swift Community Center from 1 to 5:30 p.m. The fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Registered children are invited for a story and craft on the eight-legged insect today.

Children who have already registered are reminded to join the East Greenwich Free Library, 82 Pierce St., for today’s "Anansi the Spider" storytime and craft today at 10:30 a.m. There will be a reading of Gerald McDermott's "Anansi the Spider," and following the story, children will have the opportunity to design their own spider. Works By Photographer Jeffrey Laurie Featured At Library This Month

EG Free Library displays works by a new artist each month.

The East Greenwich Free Library is featuring the photographs of Jeffrey Laurie this month, continues its tradition of highlighting artists from around the state with month-long solo exhibits. Laurie’s work is impressionistic in nature. Laurie will be at the library on Thursday (7/14) between 5 and 7pm to talk about nature and landscape photography and to offer some help to novice photographers. He will be able to give advice on equipment, subject selection and using film versus digital, among other topics. If you are interested in attending the presentation, give the library a call (884-9510, ext. 22) or stop by the circulation desk.
