Forty people, lots of foodstuffs, and one hard-working EGHS senior put together 5,000 meals ready for distribution to local food pantries earlier this month. Senior Rebecca Nunez raised more than $1,500 to buy the items needed for the meals, using the Kids Care model. Founded in 2004, Kids Care has been helping communities, schools, places of worship, businesses and service organizations around the country to package nutritious meals, all fortified with soy protein, nutrients and vitamins. Food packages include ingredient-labeling and cooking instructions and are heat sealed to ensure freshness. When it came time to put Rebecca's meals together, more than 30 volunteers showed up at the cafeteria to package the meals in a well-oiled …

She spent last semester there; the money would be used to provide a consistent water source for crops.
Taylor Knoop looks like a regular teenager. She’s medium height, with bright eyes, fair skin and a winning smile. An East Greenwich High School senior, Taylor likes Girl Scouts, riding horses and travel. It all sounds normal enough. But ask where she’s traveled and you get a glimpse of what makes Taylor stand out. Because she spent last semester - at age 16 - in the tiny mountain village of Ladakh in northern India, on an exchange program. She went there because of an overwhelming desire to see the world. She returned with an overwhelming desire to give back to that part of the world. And so, this Friday night at East Greenwich High School, Taylor will be selling malas - Buddist prayer beads - at the Homecoming football game, in an effort …

The East Greenwich High School Senior Project is a requirement for 12th graders as they prepare to graduate from high school. We are looking for community members to get involved in a couple of different ways: one is to be a mentor to a student; the second is to serve on a evaluation panel when students present their projects. Right now, in particular, we need evaluators. The purpose of Senior Project is to give all students an opportunity to exhibit skills they have acquired during their years in school, particularly in the areas of critical thinking and writing, effective listening and oral communication, problem solving, collaboration with a community mentor, and reflection. The students choose an area of interest to learn more about …

Senior Sara Pagliarini started donating less than two years ago and has already given eight pints.
“I really don’t like needles. I cry when I get shots,” says EGHS senior Sara Pagliarini. Yet this same young woman has donated blood eight times since she turned 16 less than two years ago. How come? “I know that it’s really needed,” she says. “I’d feel bad not giving blood.” Pagliarini is helping organize a blood drive at the high school that takes place on Friday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. EGHS is looking to match or even exceed the number of donations received at its blood drive last spring. That drive had 53 donors, a record for the school. According to Pagliarini, who’s work with the Rhode Island Blood Center is the basis for her senior project, each blood donation yields three products (red cells, plasma and platelets), giving …

The event is organized by EGHS senior Taylor Christie, whose sister was helped by the foundation after being diagnosed with brain cancer
The advent of the Senior Project at EGHS five years ago has given rise to all number of worthy projects, from raising money to send children to school in the Dominican Republic to volunteer coaching with Special Olympics to organizing a raffle to benefit McCauley House. On Sunday, there’s another one, but this one - a billiards tournament - is a bit of payback for senior Taylor Christie. Christie’s sister, Cora, was granted a “wish” four years ago, after diagnosis of a brain tumor. She received at computer and printer from the organization that she’s still using, Taylor said. “This wish uplifted her and my family at a horrible time in our lives; her wish gave us all comfort when we were doing our best to stay positive,” said Taylor. “My …

Very good work Rebecca and the rest. Right now 67,000 households in RI don't have enough food, this according to Andrew Shift of the Food Bank. (Shift is quoted in the Providence Journal today). He also points out that the SNAP program (food stamps) helps 24% of RI households. These people will be in a great deal of trouble if cuts to the program, currently contained in the Farm Bill, go through…   more ›
