[VIDEO] Senior Center Gets New Bus

EG Patch takes a ride with driver Harry Mosher as he picks up some seniors for lunch.

East Greenwich has a new bus for senior services and everyone seems pretty happy about it. Money to replace the bus – $75,000 – was included in this year's budget but delivery took longer than expected. It arrived two days after Christmas.  "They started it for us in July, and it was supposed to be done in November but it took a little longer," said Erin McAndrew, director of senior and human services for the town. She said it was ok because the manufacturer lent the town a bus free of charge.  The bus transports residents 55 and older, or anyone with disabilities, to and from lunch at Swift Community Center, shopping trips and doctor's appointments.  Driver Harry Mosher takes his job seriously. The senior services transportation …

Everything You Need To Know About Teens ... And Better Ask

That's the title of a special presentation at Swift tonight aimed at giving parents additional tools for raising their kids.

How do you prevent your child from drinking? ... What do you do if your child starts hanging out with kids who have more permissive parents? ... Isn’t it better to let kids drink at home since we know they will drink? These are just a few of the questions that will be addressed at “Everything You Need To Know About Kids And Better Ask” Wednesday evening at Swift Community Center. “As a parent, you have a tremendous amount of influence,” said EG Drug Counselor Bob Houghtaling, who helped put this program together with Sergeant John Carter of the EG Police. “You can model the behavior you want in your home.” He continued, “I’ve seen some really good parents who’ve been caught unawares. The key is to put yourself in the spot where you’re not…

Heat Prompts Ozone Alert, Health Advisory

All regular RIPTA bus routes are free today.

The state Department of Environmental Management predicts that air quality will reach unhealthy levels this afternoon and into the evening. According to DEM’s website, residents can help reduce air pollutant emissions by limiting car travel and the use of small engines like lawn mowers. To facilitate that, all regular RIPTA bus routes are free today. The DEM website suggests that everyone limit outdoor exercise and strenuous activity today and Thursday. If possible, stay indoor during the afternoon and early evening, when the ozone levels are highest. If you don’t have air conditioning, Swift Community Center does and you can seek respite there.  According to Elaine Colarusso at the Town Manager’s office, for residents needing heat relief …

Mahjong Keeps Seniors Sharp At Swift Community Center

Trading tiny tiles is a fun way to spend the morning and test the gray matter.

“Wun-krak. Sowth. Too-bam. Ate-dotz. Jo-quer.” The words of a seemingly exotic oriental language ring out in the back room of the Swift Community Center.  Instead of a cabal of characters from far Cathay, the chatter is produced by a group of local ladies (Heddie Neale, Louise Chapotosto, Sandra Kettelle, Marle Tober, Joan Leyden, and Elsie Cardin) calling out their tiles in a rousing game of Mahjong.  Mahjong (or Mah Jongg) is a Chinese game that resembles Gin Rummy, but, instead of cards, tiles with pictures and ideograms are pulled from a common pool then mixed and matched to create collections and combinations forming a winning hand.   The game at first appears to be relatively simple, but it’s not one of those “a minute to learn, a …
