Top Videos Of 2011

A highly subjective collection of EG Patch's best videos of the year.

In general, we feature two types of video on EG Patch. Straight action videos  captures a sporting event, a portion of a meeting, some breaking news. Then there are feature videos, which tell a story about a place or an activity or a person much the way a feature story would do. We've chosen both video types here. For straight news videos, we picked ones from two meetings. the Planning Board meeting where Stone Ridge residents turned out in force to speak against a plan to build two affordable houses along with six other houses in an extension of Granite Drive. The other meeting was a joint meeting of the Town Council and the School Committee in which the Council voted on whether or not to spend $1 million to renovate the EGHS library. …

Top Stories of 2011: News, Schools

From a DUI story that made national headlines to a tempest in a farmyard teapot, EG had lots of interesting news stories in 2011.

1. State Representative Bob Watson’s arrest and its fallout is still being felt, eight months after the fact. Watson, who represents East Greenwich and served as House minority leader at the time, was arrested for driving under the influence and possession of marijuana after he was stopped in a DUI checkpoint in New Haven, Conn., last April. Watson admitted to having the bag of marijuana but has said that he did not smoke it nor had he had too much to drink the night of the arrest. He said that he used the marijuana for medical purposes but had not registered with the state as a medical marijuana user. The subsequent firestorm prompted Watson to resign his majority leader position, but he has steadfastly maintained his innocence. Blood …

Cole Lights Are Off At Night, Repairs Being Made

It's still unclear who's responsible for the problem, School Committee members are told.

Neighbors may be able to to rest more easily now - the lights are off overnight outside Cole Middle School, School Committee members were told at Tuesday night's regular meeting. According to Ken Romeo, with project manager Strategic Building Solutions,  contractor Griffin Electric finished its evaluation Friday. "Two total power supplies were replaced and some relays and sensors were found problematic," said Romeo. He said those will be ordered soon and replaced once they arrive. He also said the exterior lighting power panel needs to be replaced, but for now they are manually turning them off and on. The lights had been on 24-7 ever since late August. They could have been turned off, but there was a fear that they would not go back on so…

This sounds like a Irene storm farce... simple ....bad planning..bad electrician. What worrries me is this the tip of the iceberg with all that is wrong with this project.....time will tell. What did we really get for our money? What will this cost for the shoddy work?   more ›

Cole Lights Remain A Problem

The lights are still on 24-7 at Cole and no resolution to the problem has been found.

Lights still shine brightly outside Cole Middle School in the parking lot and inside the building as well. According to officials, damage incurred during Tropical Storm Irene in late August. What exactly went wrong and why remain unanswered questions. According to Ken Romeo, with Strategic Building Solutions (which has overseen school construction), some of the indoor electrical panels are burning out decades faster than they should. Three such panels have been replaced, he said. Investigation of all the panels is taking place now. "There no sense installing new parts until we find the root of the problem," said Ken Romeo of SBS, which has been the company overseeing school construction. He said the same malfunction could happen and ruin …

Meanwhile, as we neighbors have blinding lights each and every night, "we'll wait and see what the report says". Haha EG at its best. Let's hope this electric bill doesn't get passed onto us taxpayers. You can bet if these lights were an unconvienience for someone important, the problem would certainly not have taken 3-4 months to solve. Another fine project!   more ›

Missed School Days Must Be Made Up, Supt. Mercurio Says

The three days will be added onto the end of the school year unless officials figure out a way to make up one day this fall.

With the school district already three days in the hole following the delayed start to the new school year, Supt. Victor Mercurio discussed the matter with School Committee members during their meeting Tuesday night at Cole Middle School. School had been scheduled to start on Aug. 31 but Tropical Storm Irene caused prolonged power outages at several of the schools, prompting that date to be pushed back to Tuesday, Sept. 6. As per the calendar created last spring, the last day of the 2011-12 school year is June 14, with five additional days built in case of unanticipated school closures. Last year, winter weather caused four snow days. With that memory still fresh, Mercurio told the School Committee that he’s trying to see if there’s a way …

Power Restored To Maplewood, Silverwood Drives

Cheers were heard on the streets as lights went on at 5:12pm on Thursday evening

There were still some dead power lines lying the street, but new lines were up and power back on in the area around Maplewood and Silverwood drives Thursday just after 5 p.m. National Grid trucks rolled into the neighborhood around 2 p.m., and power was up and running a little over three hours later at 5:12 p.m. When National Grid first arrived, people asked if they were there to get the power going.  “We are not making any guarantees," said one National Grid line worker. "We were pulled off another job to come here and left that one unfinished. We are not sure when the power will be up." Earlier, residents had heard that the National Grid website was showing that the estimate for power to be restored to the area had been pushed back to …
