On the article $15,000 In Back Taxes Owed On Olney House 'Science Center'

ReplyAm I the only person bothered by this? The town gave preferential treatment over back taxes for years? How is this in any way ethical? If it is, I'd like to know how I can get my taxes deferred for 12 years. And, who of our other elected officials currently or formerly holding office have similar arrangements? Kudo's to the Carcieri's for keeping the building from being razed, for wanting to create a science center for kids and for working to get a non-profit set up to support it. However, pay the taxes just like the rest of us property owners are expected to.

On the article Lice In EG? Yes. A Parent Offers Help

ReplyPlease parents, if you child does have lice, call and tell the school so the nurse can check other kids in the class. And, tell anyone that your kids have been in contact with: friends, babysitters, etc. Its not fun to tell another parent that their kid may have been exposed but in the end it will allow the other parent to treat early and limit the spread.

ReplyProtecting the status quo of the fire district (which is politics at its worst indeed) and against supporting our schools? He doesn't have my vote. Not to mention his refusal "to allow this town to be taken over by outsiders?" Seriously? You sound lie a pompous snob. By outsiders do you mean that people that move here, buy homes, and pay taxes? Don't forget, we "outsiders" vote. Lastly, if he is against tax increases and has been on the town council he is part of the problem. I want to elect someone who can talk solutions - not reelect someone who seems to only rail against schools and outsiders.

ReplyA singular department of public safety which would oversee police and fire in the town would provide greater savings and service to the community. Period. There is simply no reason whatsoever that the town shouldn't reap the benefits of reducing the duplication of management and administration. Nevermind the benefits of greater purchasing power! Let's use our common sense people and combine the Fire District with the Town.

ReplyI agree completely - we need to bring the fire department under the town's management. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to have a fire district. Reduction in redundancies, greater transparency, sharing of services...it just makes sense. This is no disrespect to the very brave men and women of the fire district - this is about common sense in management of limited resources.

ReplyWithout question, the Fire District should be wrapped into a Town public safety office to reduce redundancies in administrative costs and contracts, and to increase transparency in operations. With all due respect to the brave people who work as firefighters, the opposition to eliminating the Fire District seems to be from those that have a vested interest in protecting the status quo (eg: those that enjoy the perks of being employed by the Fire District). Reading the above article re: the pathetic nominating and selection process for commissioners underscores why we need to make this move as soon as possible.

ReplyI've a registered republican and I have to say bravo Carolyn. You have my vote!!!! This ridiculousness in the posts above about kids needing to learn life isn't fair is just ignorance "running a muck". This is a public school sponsored event and as such should not exclude any child based on their particular family make up. You want gender specific events? Go to private school. Thank you to Carloyn for her empathy and courage in supporting inclusiveness at our public schools in RI. Empathy and courage in the face of adversity are values we need more of in our leaders here in Rhody.

I'm with Melissa! Its actually not very complicated folks! Money that used to go into the fire district bucket will now go into the town bucket. There will be savings but likely not huge savings, nor should there be. If there are, then we really have to ask what the fire district was doing with our money all along. But, savings can and will be captured through reduction of redundancies in contracts with vendors for services, administrative processes (eg: I don't know the specifics but one would guess that there would be a single payroll process after the merger and likely a single payroll vendor), etc. At the end of the day, its about better government and increased transparency into operational budgets.
