On the article New School Personnel Policy Would End Seniority-Based Placements

ReplyWell, Leo - we will wait and see. This step builds on one the SC achieved in the 1990's when we ( I was on the SC then) negotiated a contract that specified that new hires were hired to a certification not to a general list. For example, if a new teacher was hired as a special ed teacher and he or she did not have seniority rights to a K-6 classroom position, even if certified to teach in a K-6 classroom. Previously someone hired to teach special ed joined the seniority list and had rights to any position for which he or she was certified. So, for example, EG had a school nurse taking a library media specialist based on seniority, without any evaluation of the currency of her credential in library or evaluating other candidates for the position. It has been a while since I was on the SC but it would be interesting to hear of any examples Leo has of favoritism, nepotism or prejudice in the hiring or promotion of professionals with in the system and why those criteria are any worse than seniority as a determining factor in promotion or hiring.

On the article EG A Red Town? These Progressives May Disagree

Leo - The original article said East Greenwich Education Association - which is the teachers' union. It did not say Foundation. Actually, I do not particularly hate the union having dealt with it for 12 years on the School Committee. On the other hand, if a school committee member was on the board of the the teachers' union it would represent a major conflict in negotiations and grievances. Mr. Gregson's comment and mine were perfectly appropriate to what was written at the time.

ReplyLet me understand - the new school committee member is also on the board of the union representing the teachers? How does that work for contract negotiations and grievances?

ReplyIf someone could show me actual meaningful savings, consolidation might make sense. If it is just to aggregate authority in Town Hall, that is something different. Is the council suggesting we will no longer have a fire chief or fewer firefighters and EMT's. Will the need for equipment be reduced? What exactly is the "bureaucray" they will eliminate? Regionalization in some form would seem to be the real way to save money - with fire and rescue coordinated among cities and towns. You would have more efficient use of personnel and equipment. Will regionalization be more or less likely to happen if the Fire District is merged with the town?

On the article 3 GOP Candidates Vie For State Rep. District 30 Seat

ReplyJust to be clear, no candidate has been endorsed by the East Greenwich Republican Town Committee, the West Greenwich Republican Town Committee or the State GOP. The endorsement of Mr. Fachon was by the District Committee, which includes Bob Watson and four people he chose. The District Committee gave its endorsement without interviewing the other candiddates.

ReplyMr. Fachon has not been endorsed by the East Greenwich Republican Town Committee for the House seat. The officlal endorsement that he received comes from the District 30 Republican committee. The district committee is composed of five people recommended by Bob Watson, current state representative, and appointed by the state Republican party chairman. The East Greenwich Republican Town Committee cannot provide an official endorsement but could choose to support another candidate, even if the candidate was not "the endorsed candidate." The same is true for the West Greenwich Republican town committee, as District 30 includes sections of that town that border East Greenwich. While Mr. Fachon is a worthy candidate, I think it should be clear that his endorsement comes from a small group of people chosen by Bob Watson rather than from the larger and more broad-based East Greenwich Republican Town Committee or from the state Republican Party.

ReplyHenry was a class act. I first knew him as a Little League coach. He was wonderful with the kids - a role model for sportsmanship while sharing his love of baseball. Later I came to know him as a dedicated public servant. He will be missed.

Frankly this dialogue is disappointing. Neither Bill Daly nor Michael Isaacs sounds as if he has quantified the costs and savings. Rather the assertions on each side seemed based on hopes and preconceived expectations. By now it seems reasonable that someone would have put a little effort into documenting the economics.
