Obituary: Ian M. Cameron, 24

Ian M. Cameron, 24, of East Greenwich, died in an accident in Rhode Island on June 29. Born in Nevada, he was the son of Lisa (Benbow) Cameron and the late Mark McLeod Cameron.

After graduating from Rocky Hill Prep School, Ian attended Middlebury College and also participated in research at Brown University. While at Rocky Hill, he shared and nurtured his many gifts. Eager to rise to a challenge, he dove into projects with tenacity and relish.

He was a talented writer who was awarded the English Teacher's Foundation of R.I. Grand Prize. He also served as an editor and chief of the school newspaper. Ian was selected to attend Bread Loaf, for talented up and coming writers at Middlebury College, for a week during his high school senior year. The Bread Loaf experience led to his application to Middlebury College where he was a Dean's List student and became interested in how the mind works, which preempted his summer research study at Brown.

A skilled athlete, he played lacrosse and tennis in high school. He was also an accomplished sailor and was on the Middlebury College Competitive Sailing Team.

Besides his mother he is survived by a sister, A. Shreve Cameron, paternal grandmother Catherine (Hooker) Herter and maternal grandfather John Weston Benbow. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 13th, at 4:30 p.m. at Rocky Hill School, 530 Ives Rd., East Greenwich. Ian's family is establishing a memorial fund in his honor at Washington Trust, Westerly, R.I.
