No New Blue Bin Yet? Here's What You Do

This story has been amended since it first posted.

The new program switching to every-other-week pick up for recyclables begins next Monday, Sept. 23, and many residents have received their new, 96-gallon recycle containers ... but not everyone.

The Department of Public Works is asking those who have NOT yet received a new bin to contact them, either by phone or email (see contact info below).

By the end of the week, all the bins will have been distributed, DPW said.

All residents are asked to use the new bins since the recycle trucks WILL NOT pick up the old, smaller bins.

The new trucks are automated, with an arm that extends to grab the metal bar on the new bin and empty it. The truck will have a driver only. No one else will be on the truck to pick up other items.

North Kingstown went through the same transition last year.

"We got some push back, but not much," said Phil Bergeron, North Kingstown's director of pubic works. "We offered a smaller 65 gallon option and about 200 residents took advantage. Most seemed to get used to the larger size."
